Welcome to episode 150 of the BJJ Mental Coach Podcast! Today, I’m joined by Nick Haider, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and the founder of Guardian Project Los Angeles.
Nick’s journey in martial arts began at just 7 years old after being a victim of bullying, which ignited his passion for self-defense. What started as a way to protect himself evolved into a lifelong commitment to helping others through Jiu-Jitsu. Now, as the founder of Guardian Project LA, Nick is giving back to his community by providing underprivileged youth with the same opportunities he once received. Through Jiu-Jitsu, he’s teaching life lessons, building confidence, and shaping the future of the next generation.
Joining me today as co-host is Calder Powers, who was featured on episode 136. Calder is the executive director of the Guardian Project, a non-profit offering free Jiu-Jitsu training to underprivileged youth worldwide.
I know it’s been a while since I last released an episode, as I’ve been focused on the Master Worlds. However, I’ve been busy creating content for Instagram @gustavodantasbjj and on my YouTube channel, The BJJ Mental Coach.
Enjoy the episode!

Qual é a mensagem aqui?

🧐 Do you have a Chiropractor on your team?
If you practice Jiu-Jitsu, and especially if you compete, over time you start building a support team. Besides your grappling coaches, many people add professionals like a strength and conditioning coach, physical therapist, nutritionist, mental coach, massage therapist—and yes, chiropractors.
It took me a while to feel comfortable with chiropractic care, and the key word is trust. Benefits of chiropractic care include faster recovery from injuries, better joint mobility, and overall pain relief—essential for staying consistent in training.
I’m happy I found Dr. Eric Bruere from @azspinediscandsport , located in Chandler (Ray Rd & Rural Rd) inside @oydsports . He’s been a crucial addition to my team, helping me deal with injuries and keeping me on the mats.
“Trust your team. Let others do their work so you can concentrate wholly on your own.” — Gene King 💪

🌍 Did you know that all around the world, there are jiu-jitsu students who dream of owning a gi?
Many of them train without one, hoping one day they’ll have their own. Some make do with old kimonos, others with just a jacket, and some have none at all. This is where @brausfight @brausfoundation BRAUS and Jiu-Jitsu Tribe @institutojiujitsutribe step in! 🙌
🥋 Every time you buy one of our special Kimonos (released twice a year), a jiu-jitsu student from a social project gets a brand new gi. How incredible is that? In 2023, we were able to donate 160 custom-made kimonos thanks to your support!
Unfortunately, our latest pre-sale didn’t meet expectations, and now we’re working hard to send 50 Custom Made Kimonos:
➡️ 25 for the new Instituto Jiu-Jitsu Tribe affiliate JJT Ararica @jiujitsuararica in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil
➡️ 25 for Projeto Social Batuk @projeto_social_batuk in Imperatriz, Maranhão
We need your help! Our goal is to raise $3000. If we can surpass that, we’ll send even more kimonos to kids in need. Every dollar helps to make a difference! 💪
🎥 Want to see the impact? Watch our memorable trip to the Amigos de Ouro project in Rio Bonito, Rio de Janeiro, where we delivered custom-made kimonos. The heartwarming moments are captured in a full video on @jiujitsutribe YouTube.
If you want to support the cause and help us reach our goal, donate today. Let’s change lives, one gi at a time. 🙏

Welcome to another instalment of Cole Porter’s series on his lapel guard series
In this video, Cole, a 1st-degree black belt, shares a great alternative for when your opponent is shutting down your choke attempts – the gubber guard. This technique comes into play when your opponent is effectively defending the choke and preventing you from getting under their neck. Instead of getting stuck, Cole shows how to transition to gubber guard, a powerful control that clamps the shoulder and opens up new submission opportunities.
Check out the other videos in the series to level up your lapel guard game! Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more in-depth BJJ tutorials.

What does success mean to you?🤔
Have you heard @coachwooden John Wooden’s quote on success? “Success is peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to become the best of which you are capable.” 💡
Losing in the finals of the 2024 @ibjjf Master Worlds has been a true blessing 🙏. With #thebjjmentalcoach message, you often hear about being your best self on and off the mats 🥋. But sometimes, in Jiu-Jitsu and life, your best effort isn’t enough to win—and this silver medal proves that 🥈.
This was my third Master Worlds. I won in 2012 🥇 and took second in 2014 🥈, but in 2014, I wasn’t my authentic self. I played not to lose, and it cost me. I left without peace 😕.
Now, ten years later, I’m at peace 🧘🏽♂️, even after taking second place again. Why? In 2014, I played not to lose; in 2024, I played to win 🔥. I pushed hard, but I gassed out 😓. If you’ve ever gassed in a tournament, you know the feeling.
I could have played it safe after the sweep, but I was still annoyed by playing safe in my third match😤. I wouldn’t have found peace if I did that again.
Ram deserved the win 100% 👏. He stayed calm, tied the match by almost taking my back, and won by one advantage with 30 seconds left ⏱️. He made it happen, and I didn’t.
Do you think I succeeded at the 2024 Master Worlds? Some may say “no,” but I say “Absolutely” ✅. My goal was to be my authentic self on the mat 💯, and I did that—even if it wasn’t enough to win.
Don’t chase medals 🏅. Chase authenticity, and the medals will come as a byproduct of your pursuit. 🌟
