Jean Vandesteen is one of the best practitioners I’ve spent time on the mat with. He shares with us a sweep from the guard to a position on the mount that offers a lor of submission opportunities.

Sometimes when attacking the triangle people feel they have the space to slip out the back door. This is a good attack to finish the armlock without having to open the triangle. If they push themselves back in to save the arm you still have the triangle.

How to play jiu-jitsu with your kids. In this video we show how to teach the armlock to different age divisions and skill levels. The most important part is to keep it fun!

Continuing our seminar on guard retention, we show how this basic drill applies on the ground when someone is trying to pass the guard. There are a lot of counter attacks along the way. One of my favorites is the inverted triangle. It offers a bunch attacks and sweeps. We focus mostly on the close side arm.

We share some basic guard retention techniques that are helpful when someone tries to stack pass or knee cut across the legs. Also a bonus sweep at the end.

We’ve covered this before but we go into a little more detail in this video on my go to side control framing/escape system. If you’re getting stuck flat on your back in side control, first learn how to survive and breathe. When the attack comes look for opportunities to fill the gap and free yourself so you can make the escape.

There are many names for this basic position but in the spirit of Christmas we are calling the gift wrap for this video. The Rear Naked Choke is the number 1 submission of all time. Partly due to the dominance of the back mount position and the strength and simplicity of the strangulation. Early prevention of the choke in jiu-jitsu is always best bust you must have plans for different stages of the choke.

One of my facebook friends asked me to share my favorite Ezekiel Choke setup. This is the highest percentage one I use from mount position. There is a no gi version I like quite a bit but it is quite different than this one. If you like the choke give this little setup a try.
