The Rear Naked Choke is the number 1 submission of all time. Partly due to the dominance of the back mount position and the strength and simplicity of the strangulation. Early prevention of the choke in jiu-jitsu is always best bust you must have plans for different stages of the choke.

One of my facebook friends asked me to share my favorite Ezekiel Choke setup. This is the highest percentage one I use from mount position. There is a no gi version I like quite a bit but it is quite different than this one. If you like the choke give this little setup a try.
We also shared a few defenses to the ezekiel in previous videos if you are getting caught often in it.

We had a viewer ask a question on our Unspoken Rules of Jiu-jitsu video and asked about starting jiu-jitsu and being a big guy. He was generally concerned he would hurt his training partners. We discuss our thoughts on the situation here with 2 black belts and a smaller female grappler to get some different perspectives.
Professor Josh Simon shares his variations on the butterfly sweep. A few grip changes can make a big difference on the sweeps efficacy against a skilled player.

Even though we recently discussed that starting from the knees in jiu-jitsu is generally a useless position, there are some things you can do to start a grappling session from the knees that can mirror what we do from the standing position. Professor Josh Simon shares a takedown form the knees that has a practical application to the standing position. From standing the takedown would be osoto gari, knee on belly to armlock. Josh shares some insight into how to secure the position and make sure you don’t miss the armlock after the takedown.

There was a video posted the other day showing a jiu-jitsu instructor in a fight with a body builder that was supposedly a challenge match. In this video I give my thoughts on what happened and what the challenge actually is, the history and significance of it and what it should be.
Sometimes we get stuck in patterns and comfort zones that are holding our development back. It’s important at all levels in jiu-jitsu to learn how to break free of what is holding us back and move forward. BJJ has so much to teach us all about learning how to become comfortable in the uncomfortable. If you break free from what is holding you back you will grow and will never regret it.
When you catch the triangle position, a common answer especially from bigger players is to wrap around the leg and stall. Sometimes just to stop the progression of the attack and breathe. A common answer is to switch to the omoplata attack. The omoplata is a perfectly fine option but at higher levels it generally leads to a sweep as opposed to the submission. I prefer giving this attack sequence a try before chasing the omoplata as it offers a lot more submission options for bjj competitions as well as street fighting situations.
Our friend Laura asked about strategies from starting a roll from the knees in jiu-jitsu. The reality is, this position only exists in training, and it just a way of starting an open roll on the ground. We discuss some training strategies and the different types of sparring for specific skill development for BJJ.
We would love to hear from you. What do you normally do when starting from the knees?
