You have numerous control points when holding someone in side control.
This is important to understand.
Many people begin to lose side control and abandon the whole process and try to make a big desperation movement to a whole new position. This usually just turns into a scramble which only helps their opponent.
As I said you have multiple control points which means that when i lose one of them I can simply focus on another.
In this case, I control the head. When I lose that I control the elbow. When I lose that I control the leg.
In this scenario, all of these stop my opponent getting off their back and taking my back from the Kesa Gatame.
I’ll be going much more in-depth into these concepts and mechanics in my Pressure & Control DVD

Recently, various people sent me a video of a fight in what looked like military barracks.
In the video, one of the guys gets a guillotine and goes to the ground with it. in the ensuing grapple, the person getting guillotined manages to grab hold of the other person’s groin and begins to squeeze.
The person immediately lets go of the choke and begins to beg for mercy.
In this video, we discuss why this is a bad example of not adjusting your BJJ for real world scenarios and what are some steps the Guillotine should have done.

I tell my students all the time that your goal is to get to certain positions (I call them “Staging Areas” where you are as safe as possible while knowing all your options.
The goal in self defense is to avoid damage and get to these positions
The modified seatbelt is one such option with numerous takedown opportunities. Here, I transition from the seatbelt to another position which I consider very useful for military or police.
I also cover a couple simple takedowns from this position.

It can be especially difficult to escape side control when your opponent switches their arm position. You’re also in constant danger of a kimura attack.
This effectively stops the re-guard – and if they’re keeping weight on you, you may not be able to turn over for the single leg escape.
Here, I show an option for when you’re trapped in this position. As with most reversals, it’s important that you practice your timing and getting the feel for when their weight is compromised.

This is a concept I have to explain over and over to people. And, some never seem to understand.
All the time now I see examples of this fallacious way of thinking of fighting, namely, that there are perfect or best/worst techniques.
You see videos like the “Perfect Mount Escape” or hear a coach say “this is the best way to do an armlock.”
To me, this shows a gift misunderstanding of fighting and self defence.
Here, I discuss why this is a really damaging way of teaching.

This is the first in a series we plan to do where we discuss different topics in Martial Arts, Jiu-Jitsu and Combative Arts.

I’m planning to begin doing more seminars. If you’re interested in hosting me for one, please contact me at roymarshjiujitsu@gmail.com.
I put together this video to show the responses and feedback to past seminars of mine. What generally separates my seminars and teaching from many is that I have a strong focus on giving a deeper conceptual and detailed understanding of the Art so that the student can retain and adapt what I teach.
In my experience this is far more beneficial than teaching a bunch of cool moves that students forget as soon as they walk out the door.

I asked one of my students about some his Ezekiel Set Ups. Because he can’t use his legs, he’s become dangerous from “bad” positions.
And, the Ezekiel Choke is one of his sneakiest, most useful weapons.
I asked him to show me a few of his set ups.
Here he shows a cool set up from the bottom of side control.

I try not to base my Jiu-Jitsu around flexibility, strength or trick moves. But, it never hurts to have a few surprises in your bag.
This is a sweep I catch more often than I should.
