Bia Basilio showing some beautiful technique at the 2023 Brasileiro.
Today’s video we’ve got a question from “hitanddip”, from a recent YouTube Videos comment section, asking:
“I want to ask; how do you get better at going on Attack Mode as a Beginner (in Jiu-Jitsu)”
This is a great question!
This is often a question many beginners will have. Especially since all of us will come into the gym, and at first, spend most of the time balling up, trying not to get submitted.
At some point in your BJJ training journey, you will get pretty good at not getting submitted.
Once you get to that point, you’ll start asking yourself how you can start adding some offense on your own, instead of just surviving in the rounds against the upper belts.
So, once you get to this point, how do you start adding offense into your game?
In this video I’ll give my perspective and give you guys a couple of ideal solutions to this common beginner issue – including developing you BJJ “GPS”.
If you were going through something similar, hopefully you find the ideas in the video helpful for you.

Today’s question comes from Levi Schwartz:
He asks for me to show a back take that he saw me hit while watching a recent BJJ rolling video of mine here on the YouTube.
The Back Take came from a scramble with one of my Jiu-Jitsu Brown Belts, Charlie, and in this video, I’ll show you how I set it up & how you can look for it, should you have the chance to do it while rolling.
The position we work from to get into this back take has a lot of names in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
But it essentially started from my partners hip switch, from side control to reverse side control, which exposed his back and gave me the space I needed to execute the technique.
I did this technique in the Gi, while rolling, but you can modify it for No-GI Jiu-Jitsu as well, which is what I do in this video.
Hopefully you guys enjoyed the technique!

Today we’re going to talk about a DISGUSTING MYTH that’s poplar in a lot of martial arts, including BJJ.
This topic came up because my Wife, Jess, is in a cleaning group on Facebook and read a post in the group from a woman asking whether or not she should wash her son’s belt, because the stripes will fall off if she does.
This led to some pretty disgusting and controversial replies, including one man, who claims to be a lifelong martial artist, saying that he NEVER washed his Belt in all his years of training.
This disgusting myth is one that will undoubtedly lead to disease, skin infections, and horrible break outs at your gyms and I’ll explain WHY you should definitely wash your belt if you train.
On top of that we dig a bit into the history of the belt system and how this myth may have come into fruition in most martial arts like Judo, Karate, and of course Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & how it all started as a copycat idea stolen from colligate swim culture.
Hopefully you found the video useful, if you weren’t sure if you should clean your belt or not & hopefully you enjoyed learning a bit of the history of many martial art belt systems.

What’s up guys.
So, in today’s video I’m going to show you guys another “Day in the Class” of the Chewsters Gym, aka, Derby City MMA in Louisville, Kentucky.
You’ll be walked through our most recent Jiu-Jitsu training module, Chest-to-Chest Half Guard Passing, and even learn the submission focus for that day.
In the video you’ll see me talking crap with a bunch of my Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu students.
It’s all fun and games and we try our best never to cross the lines (although I can only speak for myself haha)!
A Little bit of sh** talking never hurt no one!
Also, you’ll see my students go through the drills, some live rolling, and a few other behind the scenes moments that you won’t normally find in one of my BJJ Q&A style talking videos.
Hopefully you guys are enjoying these vlog style videos!
Let me know what you think, and what you’d like to see more of in these types of videos in the comments below.

What’s up guys,
Today we have a question from a fan, who ask “is Gi or No-Gi Better for Old Guy Beginners?”
Now, in this video I rephrase the question a bit, to this:
Is Gi or No-Gi Easier for Older Beginners in Jiu-Jitsu?
The reason I do this is because “better” is a bit subjective, whereas the difficultly between the two, especially as one tends to get older, definitely changes for most normal people. This is due to the physicality, speed, and slipperiness of one vs. the other.
With that being said there are clear benefits of doing both. Doing No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu will help with your Gi BJJ, and vice versa.
In the video I’ll explain which of the 2 I think is easier, why, and how training both can be beneficial to your overall Jiu-Jitsu game, regardless of which one you prefer.
Of course, this is all just my opinion.
If you’re an older grappler who was wondering which style of BJJ you should do, then hopefully you found this video helpful for you.

What’s up guys,
So recently, I posted a video about drilling in BJJ and some popular opinions on it from guys like John Danaher.
And in the wake of sharing my opinion, as this often happens on the internet, many people misunderstood the point of the video.
The misunderstanding being that “X” other form of training in Jiu-Jitsu is not as good as Drilling.
But that’s not what the video is about.
The focus of the video was an emphasis on focused drilling vs. passive/mindless drilling in training. So, in a order to clarify (as much as I possibly can in 7 minutes) we will go a little deeper into my ideal form of training, as it relates to drilling, and other things in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Hopefully you find the ideas in this video helpful & if you needed some clarification, then this did it for you.

Cole Abate vs Dudu Granzotto did not disappoint.
Today’s question comes from FitJiuJitsuSydney, they sent me a message about drilling, they ask:
“What do you think about John Danaher’s opinion, saying that more reps don’t always mean better technique?”
Often times we hear about these quick fixes to BJJ, the 3-year black belts, the “Get good fast” instructionals, etc. And often, this undermines the importance of focused drilling and try’s selling some idea that’s easy & tends to lack any sort of nuance.
In the video I’ll discuss my thoughts on John Danaher’s idea and how I try to apply it to my own training, and how I try to apply it to the training of my students.
Specifically, I’ll dive into the issue with drilling where most people just “go through the motions” instead of having focused, intentional, drilling sessions.
I’ll also discuss some ideas related to the growth of high-level athletes in other sports, this idea coming from a book I had once read, and how these ideas can apply to your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu technique and developing that “feel” with intentional drilling.
Now, while I think this focused drilling is great, I also talk about some of the downsides with this type of training, especially for day-to-day grapplers & how adding play to these focus training sessions can be beneficial too.
Hopefully you found the ideas in this video helpful.
