For that person that has impecccable Kimura defense, it can be tempting to abandon the Kimura and look for something else. But don’t you dare! The Kimura roll is a great option that will have you roll out of his half guard into a very strong submission threat.
Depending on the opponent’s reaction to the roll, you might get a triangle, an arm bar, a back take, or a same side Kimura. It’s a very versatile attack. We even saw this used recently in the UFC by Davi Ramos, who scored a submission of this by taking the back.

When your opponent stifles your Kimura attacks by keeping his arm tight to his body, then we can simply divert his attention by passing his guard while pinning his wrist. In MMA, this position is a triple threat: submission, guard pass, and striking. Plus, the longer you hold this position, the more drained your opponent will be as they carry your weight the entire time.
The key to being successful here is to switch to different threats everytime they defend, keeping them constantly guessing where you are going next, and frustrating them as they play pure defense while you get to pour on the pressure.

This is perhaps my most common way of tapping people from top half guard, as many people try to swim out of the Kimura as an escape – only to succumb to the Figure Four Arm Lock. It’s important to understand the direction to apply force, which is dictated by the direction the opponent’s elbow is pointing, and to establish a proper fulcrum by getting your elbow just behind their elbow (towards the tricep). A final trick here is to do a big bicep contraction, which will raise the fulcrum higher. This is helpful particularly on flexible opponents, as you will need to extend their arm much further.

If your opponent is making the standard Kimura difficult for you, the power move is to step over. From the Half guard, the step over Kimura is brutal, and is essentially a check mate position.

One of the big submission threats a top player can use against half guard is the Kimura. It isolates the guard players best defender, and the position itself is draining to be in once you go cross body and drop your weight on them.
There are some tweaks that need to be made to get the most out of this Kimura. In particular, we want to focus on bringing the opponent’s elbow to their ear, as we are limited in the amount of rotation we can perform and top pressure in half guard.

I use the reverse seat belt quite often, as it is an easy scramble to get into if you know how to stay behind your opponent’s arms. From half guard, it comes up regularly as people try to sit out and attack the kimura. So you just have to go over their back at the same time they are trying to turn away from you.
Then, you reach for that far hip, and you can work a hip bump if they stay on their side, or a back take if they come to their fours.

Someone with a good squeeze pass can ruin your day. Besides getting passed, you can get your neck and chin torqued into oblivion with the right opponent. I have had my share of excellent squeeze passers, which is how I developed my escape. It starts by first getting my opponent’s hips down my body, so that I can get their shoulder line away from my face and onto my chest.
You accomplish this by utilizing the lock down and an assist with your arms to yank down that shoulder. Once you got that, you can then pummel inside on the cross face arm. That will allow you to get your frames back together, and then you can fight for under hooks.

The Under Hook Escape is a must know stand up for any martial artist. For MMA, half guard can be a strong top position to work from, which makes escaping important. Using the power of the under hook, you can work your way up to your feet and often times come up with a better position or a well timed exit strike.
One of the key things to keep yourself out of danger is to make sure that you can keep your head safe by either staying under his chin or on his temple.

One of my favorite positions to finish a guillotine from is the half guard. A lot of people mistakenly believe that you can’t finish a guillotine from half guard. That is only half true. ๐
If you have the head on the side of your body where you leg is trapped, then you are in the money. Not only do you have a strong finish because of your hip angle, but you also have easy sweeps here too.
