BIG NEWS!
My new BJJ Instructional is out.
I recently traveled to BJJ Schwerte where I taught a 2 day Group Private on my Back Game.
Mirco Wendt and the students there were kind enough to let me videotape it and release it on my Selz site.
In this seminar I focused a lot on how to control the back and also how to make fundamental submissions more effective.
And, as with my other instructionals, I try to really provide conceptual frameworks so you donβt just get a bunch of quick techniques with very little detail that youβll forget as soon as you leave the mats.
If youβre interested, you can find the instructional (and my other ones) here: https://roymarsh.selz.com
Also, I want to give a big thanks to Erkan Mete for filming and to BjΓΆrn Fiegler for being my Uke.
From the Headcoach of BJJ Schwerte:
“The back control & attack seminar was again an amazing seminar with you and covered lots of details I kind of missed out or did “sloppyβ through my almost 10 years of grappling experience.
Now as I am able to review the seminar again online, it is even better π€ππ».
I canβt thank you enough, Roy. Of course, as a bjj purple belt I knew “someβ backmount control stuff before, attacks like rear naked choke and bow and arrow choke, you name it, but never in such details and in depth like now after attending the seminar.
It was an eye opener and all of our team could improve our skills and knowledge immediately.
The fundamentals about back control you taught us really skyrocketed our performance on the mat and gave us a deeper understanding of not only how to do certain things, but why!
For example I first learned the rear naked choke in 2010 and hit it for sure hundreds of times in rolling, but now it is 100% tighter and more effective
See you soon for the next seminar.

Recently, I saw a video of a LEO engaged in a physical confrontation with a 15 year old boy.
He attempted to tackle the boy and was caught in a guillotine hold/choke. It was obvious he didn’t know how to escape and had to be rescued by his partner.
I discuss why it’s extremely important for Law Enforcement Officers to train Jiu-Jitsu. But, it’s very important that you choose a school with a strong focus on real world self defense.
We also cover how to escape this powerful hold, both standing and on the ground.
I now have a Patreon where I post videos from my Classes.
You can come be on the mats with me.

Here’s a video of my assistant, Erkan, and I having a fun roll.
I play a lot of butterfly guard because I always trained with bigger people and it was a way to keep their weight off of me and to get on top.
So, I’m always looking to get a hook in whenever I can if I’m playing open guard.
I cover my thoughts on the problems he presented in his pass and how I approached dealing with them.

This is a short clip of a much longer series from my Patreon.
This is a basics class so I don’t go too far into detail on this movement.
But, this is one of the most crucial movements in grappling – and, one I see many BJJ practitioners have trouble with or not really understand the utility of.
I will explore this movement much more in my Escaping Side Control DVD that I’m working on.
But, if you want to train with me on the mats, you can do so now by joining my Patreon: www.patreon.com/roymarshjiujitsu
I am videotaping all my classes and uploading them for all my Patreon subscribers.

One of my American students (and one of the few people I’ve promoted to Purple Belt), Isaiah Monroe, fought recently on the UFC FightPass CFFC Show.
He uses the Arm-In Guillotine to control the fight and get it to where he can finish the fight.
I will soon cover my breakdown on his use of it soon (Isaiah was one of my assistants in my Guillotine Code DVD).
Isaiah also very kindly gives me a shoutout in his post fight interview.
If you want to know what it’s like to train with me, I have a Patreon now where I post videos from my classes so you can virtually join me on the mats.

Hey, guys.
Here’s an opportunity to get on the mats and learn from me.
I’ve had former students – as well as people who’ve never trained with me –
tell me they wish they could come to my classes.
So, I decided to do something I’ve been thinking about for a long time – creating a Patreon account where I can host videos of my classes.
For only $10 you’ll get access to all my class lessons and, if you enjoy my concept-focused and detailed style of teaching, I think you’ll get a lot of it.
Each week, I will add a minimum of 3 videos (though likely quite a few more). I will post some older videos I’ve had waiting but it will be primarily new class videos.
I will also post videos on special subjects, blogs and vlogs.
I really hope if you enjoy my teaching then you’ll come join my class.
I will still post Videos on here when I can (I’ve got a new camera so that should happen more often).
And, I am still working on my new DVDs and hopefully will have those starting to be released soon.

It’s important to understand the pros and cons of every position and how they apply in different formats.
I was asked to discuss my thoughts on 3/4 mount – a position I actually use quite a bit. And, I discuss why here

We’ve covered early and middle timeline back escapes in our last two videos.
Now, Erkan and I cover a late escape when they’ve locked their seatbelt and pulled you to the choke side.

This is the continuation of our Escaping the Back Series. we previoucly covered our Early escape and now we move deeper into the timeline (Middle).
Our general mechanics remain the same: Disconnect his main two connection points by using the ground to scrape him off and then we explore options from there.

Erkan and I will be doing videos on various techniques and topics while people are not able to train at their schools.
I made a request for topics that people wanted me to cover and one of the top ones was escaping back control.
I’m a big believer in learning a timeline of events rather than isolated events so we shot a series of back escapes.
In this video, we are covering an early escape.
It’s important to focus as much as possible on early escapes rather than worst case scenarios (which we will cover) because if you only learn late escapes you tend to not address the danger until it is late in the timeline.
