Offbalancing someone in the grappling arts is known as ‘Kuzushi’. Typically people use the term Kuzushi in a Judo context, but it can also be used in a jiu-jitsu context where you use it to set up sweeps, submissions and transitions to more dominant guard positions.
You can use Kuzushi from the guard in both gi and not gi, and in every form of guard including the closed guard, recumbent open guard, seated guard, half guard, etc.
The three basic types of Kuzushi from the guard are,
1, Hanging or swinging Kuzushi
2, Blocking or pushing Kuzushi, and
3, Intercepting Kuzushi
Once he’s off-balance and his alignment broken he’ll be much easier to deal with. He won’t be trying to pass your guard. He’ll be so off balance that all he’ll be thinking about is recovering his position.
Check out our in-depth instructional on how to use gripfighting and Kuzushi to dominate the guard at https://www.grapplearts.com/kuzushi
In today’s BJJ technique video I show an effective fundamental sweep from Full Guard can work from White Belt to Black Belt. It’s also a sweep that has a ton of carry-over value to things like armbars, oma-platas and other techniques from closed guard. Lastly, it’s also a sweep for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, that if you get good at using it, can lead to lots of other sweeps and submissions.
That sweep is non other than the Pendulum Sweep and is right in line with things like Scissor Sweeps as Fundamentals all White Belts must have some understanding of. Now in this video I show the distinction I make between the Pendulum and the Flower sweep because they get mixed up. Now I’m not saying everyone in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu goes by the same names as I share in the video, but this is what I call them.
Anyways, I share some details on how to set it up, how to execute it and how to finish it that I hope are useful to you and your Jiu-jitsu.
Thanks for watching.

I play a lot of butterfly guard because I always trained with bigger people and it was a way to keep their weight off of me and to get on top.
So, I’m always looking to get a hook in whenever I can if I’m playing open guard.

Getting smashed in half guard when your opponent has the cross face and underhook sucks! Here are 3 of my favorite responses to this situation, including 1) the Kamikaze Sweep, 2) the Butterfly Lift, and 3) the Twist Sweep.
Each of these techniques has an aggressive option ending in a sweep where you get to the top, and a less aggressive option where you use the threat of the sweep to re-establish a good guard position. You can also chain these threats together making it extremely difficult for your opponent to hold you down.

Are you wanting to get started with X Guard in BJJ? If so, this is one of the sweeps I encourage newbies with X Guard to use.
I’m going to assume you have a basic way of getting to X Guard already. If not, you need to focus on an entry to X Guard .
If you need some examples of entries. Check out this X Guard drilling video I did: https://youtu.be/4sEveMOIpqo
Once you’re in X Guard you can use the sweep I show in the video.
The big key, as is typical with any sweep in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, is to off balance the person. Once off balanced the sweep is easier to hit.
Also, you’ll see the technical standup used as the finish to the sweep which is a basic movement taught in BJJ classes which then gets repurposed for this sweeping technique.
I hope the sweep is useful to you in getting started with X Guard.

In submission grappling you have two main choices for open guard: hooks inside (e.g. the butterfly guard) or legs outside (e.g. the de la Riva guard). Which should you employ?
The right style of guard depends on the exact situation. In this video Rob Biernacki takes you through the transitions from inside hooks to legs outside and back, as well as breaking down the tactical and strategic reasons you might prefer one position over the other.
Check out Rob’s No Gi de la Riva Formula at https://www.,grapplearts.com/DLR for more on the leg outside type of guard, and Rob’s Modern Leglock Formula at https://www,grapplearts.com/leglocks for more a deep dive into the hooks inside style of guard.
A rant about how standing up from guard is just as valid a technique as sweeps and submissions. And when it comes to self defense the technical standup is absolutely critical! Check out https://www.grapplearts.com/selfdefenseguard for more examples of how the standup gets integrated into your guard game, and/or check out the related videos below:
