Most people think of grip fighting as something you do when you are sitting up, but learning to effectively defend and control off your back is key to being able to establish an initial attack grip.

These 3 Triangle choke setups are really sneaky and I have been using them a lot recently after studying Felipe Andrew. When developing a guard itβs not only important to have good systems and sweeps but also to have some really dangerous submissions that are hard to predict because it keeps your opponent in a level of fear which makes them more defensive. I included conception clips of all the techniques. Hope you like the video and please comment and ask questions if you have any.

This video I discuss the concept of single sleeve control. This is commonly one of the first grips you get in jiu jitsu as your opponent needs to use his hand to commit to making a grip which always makes a sleeve available. This position is a starting point for transitioning into most open guards in BJJ such as Collar Sleeve, Spider/Double Sleeve, Cross Sleeve DLR, Cross Guard, Romulo Guard, Reverse DLR and more. I cover some basics of control as well as concepts for how you can transition to other positions with it. Let me know if you have any questions or requests.

In this video, I show some of my training session and how I train with one arm.
It has been a learning experience from knowing which positions I should try to implement and what to avoid during a training session.
It has been humbling but a great learning experience in developing my guard retention, mobility, and importance of control and position.
Thanks to my coach, Chewy, for getting some movement in with me during the roll and taking the time to teach and give me some advice during training!

A common problem I see when people are defending their guard is they have their elbows too high on the inside of their knees. This creates a separation from your lower body and open body that makes it easier for your opponent to open up your elbow knee space which will lead to guard passes. In this video I discuss a lot of the benefits of keeping your elbows on the outside of your knees (Better framing of hip, tighter core, better grip fighting) Let me know if you guys have any more questions and or thoughts.

Half Guard is one of my favorite Brazilian Jiujitsu positions to play from on the bottom. I love the ability to get sweeps even against bigger stronger opponents. But one of the most frustrating problems with Half Guard (at least early on) is getting flattened out on your back when someone is passing.
When you’re flat on your back you Half Guard is useless and is more of an offensive position for the BJJ practitioner on top.
In this video I’ll show some basic grip fighting options that will prevent your Half Guard from being wrecked in BJJ. Along with the grips I’ll also show you how to go with the power to escape a strong squeeze on top when you’re flat in Half Guard.
If you’re struggling with Half Guard in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu because you get stuck flat on your back then I hope this video is useful to you!
Thanks for watching the video!

Holding on to grips too long is one of the biggest mistakes in Guard Retention I see people make when playing guard at all levels. To control someone you need grips but at the same time when someone is passing you, you need to know when yo let go of the grips and focus on framing and protecting your elbow knee space. This skill set of finding the time to defend and then re entangle your opponent is a critical transition skill set that is often overlooked.
