The Most Overlooked Aspect of Having a Strong Submissions in BJJ

Today our question comes in from a White Belt on Instagram who wants to be more offensive.

He says that he gets stuck on the bottom playing defense, like most White Belts in BJJ do, and just wants to be more offensive.

He asks how I think he can work on his ability to submit from the back and create some reliable offensive.

I send him back a message and ask him what his go-to defensive strategy is, his go to techniques off of his back.

He replies that he doesn’t really have any go-to’s and doesn’t want to focus on his “go-to” control and defensive techniques, he just wants to score more submissions.

In this video I’ll tell you why it’s more important to focus on developing solid control, guard retention, and defense on bottom, before you can develop a reliable offense, both on bottom and on top.

You have to be able to defend yourself. You have to be able to survive first. You have to be able to play off of your back in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

One of the things that made my top game better (subs and guard passing) was my ability to play off my back, defend guard passes, sweeps, etc.

And this is coming from a guy with a background in Wrestling (so it was uncomfortable for me too, at first!).

Hopefully some of you guys found this video helpful, especially if you were struggling with a similar issue as today’s messenger.
