What’s up guys!
So, today’s video is going to be a little different.
It’s more of a BJJ Vlog.
I’ll take you guys into one of our day-to-day Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu sessions. In this class we were focusing on smash passing in the Gi, specifically passing from top half guard.
The techniques in this video are pretty basic and build off of some Half Guard & Underhook passing techniques that we focused on in the weeks prior to this class.
You’ll get to see me teach some of my favorite Chest-to-Chest passing techniques, how to get around the Knee Shield of your opponents, some live Jiu-Jitsu rolling, and more.
The techniques in this video work well for anyone, but it’s definitely a great one if you’re a little older, a little bigger, a little less athletic, or if you just want to shut down your speedy, or leg lock heavy, opponents.
On top of all of that, the techniques in the video work well in both Gi and No-GI.
Hopefully you guys find a few ideas in the video useful and just had fun watching the vlog!

Recently, I got a question from “Thatcoast” on YouTube who asks:
What did you learn as a Purple Belt in BJJ, that you still use the most as a Black Belt in Jiu-Jitsu.
It’s a great question, as Purple Belt was an interesting Belt for me!
As a Purple Belt, there were a ton of different changes going on including my original Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gym being a rather hard-nosed, grimy, Jiu-Jitsu gym.
We were a small gym, competition focused, both for BJJ and MMA. Because of this hardcore culture, we didn’t really get “good” at a ton of techniques. Rather, we were pretty good at what we did, which was very limited in one way or another, and very “tough” (in my case I was basically just a Wrestler and Top Player)
When I got my Purple Belt, because of the type of training I would do at my gym, I went through this phase where I would lose to other Purple Belts at Jiu-Jitsu competitions quiet often.
I was getting SMOKED…
If I did win, I was rarely winning because of technicality.
Eventually I changed gyms, and my new coaches told me that to get my brown belt I needed to EXPAND my game, or there was no chance of a promotion.
I was initially resistant to this, I never learned to “lose” in practice, and this made me plateau. But I eventually overcame this and was able to get promoted.
As a Purple Belt, more than just techniques, I learned how to yield to the process. Learning how to try new things, and learning to lose in practice so that I could eventually win in competitions, and even more importantly learn how to become good at Jiu-Jitsu (not just “tough”)
Hopefully you find the ideas in this video helpful to you.

In today’s video I answer a question from a viewer named Senju, who recently competed at a BJJ tournament against an opponent who he had previously beaten decisively.
This time however, at this Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition, he barely beat this guy, winning on a judge’s decision.
At the end of the day Senju feels like he didn’t win the match.
He says he feels gross about the victory and ask how I would deal with these feelings that bottle up when you don’t think you deserved to win a match, that you in fact do win on the score board (in his case by advantage)
Often times in BJJ you’re going to run into the same opponents on your way up the competitive circuit, because realistically there aren’t that many people who compete.
Naturally there’s going to be progress in both competitors grappling games as time goes on and close matches will undoubtedly vary in results (unless you’re way better than your opponent).
In this video I’ll talk more about this back-and-forth that often happens in BJJ, a recent ADCC Trials winner(a buddy of mine Jacob Couch) who struggled with this against a game opponent & then won when it “mattered”, and more revolving around this unique subject in Jiu-Jitsu.
Hopefully you find these ideas helpful in some way, especially if you’ve been in a similar situation to Senju.

If you play Half Guard in BJJ then 1 of the guard passes that can absolutely destroy you is the knee cut pass. Also called the cut through or knee slice. This guard pass can rip through a Half Guard position.
And this is the focus of today’s video that answers a question from a Jason who’s having trouble with this exact scenario.
As a Half Guard player myself, in the video I’ll show you 1 of my best ways for stopping standing guard passes when I’m trying to use a bottom half guard position.
Hope the leg pummeling technique helps you.

Today we’ve got a question from “Bob” who says he used to train BJJ in the United States, however he’s currently training overseas.
He says his current gym is great, the training partners are great, the coach is great, the training is great, and so on…
The only problem Bob has with his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu coach is that they only promote based off of competition experience.
He says he’s not used to this and isn’t sure what to do since he personally does not like to compete in Jiu-Jitsu tournaments.
He’s worried that he could be stuck at his current belt level for years just because he doesn’t compete and isn’t sure what to do.
He sends me the message and wonders what I think about the situation.
So, here’s what I have to say…

You Have to Rethink What GOOD Training is as a Higher Belt in BJJ
Good Training Doesn’t Just Mean Getting Smashed
This Purple Belt Associates Good Training with Being smase
In today’s video I answer a question from a guys who is a purple belt and 1 of the higher belts in his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu gym.
His question concerns improvement and hard training. Since he’s 1 of the higher belts during the rolling, he doesn’t get smashed like he used to. But when he looks back on his training, he was getting very good, very fast, when he was a newer guy and was getting smashed.
So his question is whether to move to a gym or change his training habits.
So in this video I talk about some ideas that could be useful for anyone in BJJ, but especially for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioners with a fair amount of experience under their belt.
Hope the video helps you.
