Here’s a sneaky idea to use in transitions with back mount that helps me finish way more rear naked chokes. Give it a try.

I was recently asked if drilling is 100% necessary to get good at BJJ. Now, when we say drilling, I interpret this as meaning, “do we need to perform large amounts of repetitions over and over again” to an unresisting opponent.
The answer is no. There are ways to work around it. And in this video, I share an idea from a conversation I had with BJJ world champ Bernardo Faria who hated drilling moves over and over again but was very successful in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
The idea I share from the conversation is very simple and straight-forward, but the discipline to do it during training could make huge improvements in your game.
Hope the tip helps.

Today’s BJJ technique video is a continuation of the passing idea I shared last week about using half guard to slow down younger, faster or more athletic opponents.
In today’s video I answer a question about the Reverse Half Guard position as a question came up on the original video. I show some details on how to use the Reverse Half Guard position in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, so you don’t get reverse or lose control of your opponent. But also, how to strategically place your weight on your opponent to apply maximum pressure.
This can be a great position whether you’re older and need to slow down the young whipper snappers in your class or if you just run into someone who has a really mobile guard.
If you’re trying to figure out ways to slow down training partners or opponents with guard passing then I hope this video is useful to you!

Recently I was asked what it means to survive as a White Belt in BJJ. The question comes from a new White Belt who hears “you need to survive” all the time in his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu classes.
So I answer the question and talk about the idea of surviving during practice with skill and technique but also surviving through the rough part of learning a new skill.
Learning a new skill is tough, it’s never easy, and I explain 1 of the mental road blocks that happens with people and how to work through it.
Hope the ideas in the video are helpful!

In today’s video I show a simple half guard top position I’ve been working on to slow things down with guard passing in BJJ, especially No Gi.
If you’ve watched any of my stuff in the last year or so you’ve probably heard me complain about being older. I’m not old by normal standards but by athletic standards I am. I also have some super tough young Purple, Brown and Black Belts that give me all I can handle.
So, to slow down the speed with the passing on top I’ve been focused on a specific position a lot. It’s very similar to a position I’ve used in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu for years and shown on the channel. But in the video, I show some specific adjustments I’ve been working in to stay tighter, add more pressure and slow my opponents down.
