De la Riva Pass Barnyard Cat
In this video I show an aggressive flop pass. This is a very competitive pass that pairs well with a lot of other open guard passes. It takes some practice with the timing and the pathway for the legs but once you have drilled it, this pass is highly effective.
One of the things that I had to stress during the class is the pathway for the leg that is on the outside. This pass is NOT a Back Step or Long Step. If you do it this way (and it looks very similiar) then you will find that your opponent can turn their knees towards you and you may find yourself in guard a lot. Rather than it being a back step, make it about the pathway of the outside leg behind the knee behind the knee pit.
I included a short collection of my students practicing the movement and you will see that there are people of all belt rank practicing this and they all have various levels of hip movement. You should really strive to flair the hips but not in the backstep motion.
lastly, you will have to kill your own posture to be able to do this effectively. Notice that I lean my head forward and bring the trunk of my body parallel with the shin. This helps greatly and is not talked about in the video.
De la Riva Pass Chicken Squat to Pony Pass
In this video I show an Open Guard Pass that I call the Pony Pass. This is an important transition that presents itself a lot throughout various positions but I feel this is one of the easiest ways to practice the movement.
After the demonstration of the technique I included some instruction on what a good training partner will do to produce the desired space for practice. Obviously, while rolling, this will be a much smaller window but the concept applies the same.
This is part of a passing sequence that I showed from DLR and while this does not appear to be that viable, when paired with the second pass, it happens a lot more than you would think.
As you get better at this movement you will not have to place your hands on the floor (and you really should avoid doing that after you master the weight transfer and pathway with your hips).

The knee Shield crusher
This is one of my favorite ways to get passed the knee shield besides just standing up and disengaging. I use the shin to shin pass all the time. I usually try to frustrate the person by fighting grips and waiting for my opportunity than pull the trigger on the pass.

Lanky grapplers Eliminate Closed guard like this!
This is my favorite way to pass the Closed guard l. It’s so much easier as a lanky grappler to just stand up. It eliminates a lot of the grip battles and submissions.
I am so tall that when I stand up most of the time their back isn’t even touching the floor haha making it even harder for them to sweep me.
As long as you keep control of an arm you won’t have much trouble with this break. Some people like to go crossgrip on the sleeve but I don’t do that because I feel it gives an advantage to delariva players
P.S no liabilities

Surprise Kneebar from Top Half Guard
Mike Zenga has a killer kneebar from the top half guard when he’s passing with the over-under pass. Here’s how he does it! Either you get the submission or he gives you the guard pass, so you win either way!
Spider Guard Pass Duck Under
In this video I show a really fun and dynamic pass. I’ve known this pass for awhile, and while I’ve gotten some success out of it, it is important to realize that it not something you should rely on regularly.
Once your opponent/partner gets a beat on you that you like to do this they will be very careful of allowing that top leg to stay straight. This can be a powerful thing in setting up your other passes, as the threat of this is forcing them to continually pump their legs. Make sure you use the threat of this, to set up your other passes.
With that being said, makes sure to watch the video to see the pathway that I take. There is some variance available in the pass, but make sure that you look towards the ceiling and create backwards pressure on the calf while at the same time you’re performing a wrestling shot.
Never get passed by this again!
The over under pass can be extremely frustrating going against a bigger opponent. They can continually drive all their weight down on your stomach and deplete you of your energy.
What you have to do is stop the person from getting their head across your body and allowing them to drive all their weight into you.
If you use your wrist to help peel their head off you will have more success defending the pass. It’s not really a dick move just a cross face to prevent getting smashed
P.S. No liabilities
Hopefully you all enjoyed this video and got a good laugh, and another technique for the arsenal. Thanks for watching!
