Why do you train Jiu-Jitsu:
Students at some schools: โto get in shape both physically and spiritually. To improve my life and allow me an avenue of growth.โ
Students at other schools: โI just want to put on some sweet spats and flow, brah. Just play the game and pull some killer moves with my Jitz.โ
Then, there are my students: โฆ.
Of course, we’re not claiming that Verena “invented” this move. But, it was just something she came up with in the middle of our roll and so I decided to call it the “Verena.”

Mirco Wendt (Owner and Head Instructor of the Roy Marsh Jiu-Jitsu Affiliate in Schwerte, NRW) teaches a great way to handle one of the most difficult problems in BJJ: opening and passing the Closed Guard.
If you want to learn Complete Jiu-Jitsu from a highly-technical instructor and in a great, friendly atmosphere check out Brazilian jiu-jitsu Schwerte (On Facebook).
There is a very important distinction between BJJ for Sport and BJJ for Self-Defense/Fighting.
It’s not so much about techniques but about the distances you fight from and the postures you use.
These have to be trained because if your instinct is to adopt the wrong posture or distance versus a powerful striker you may not have time to correct your mistake once you start taking damage.
In this video, I teach how to pass guard vs someone trying to kick at you. The posture and positioning are almost the exact opposite of a Sport situation as the threat presented is almost the exact opposite (the guard player trying to to strike to make distance as opposed to trying to entangle the passer in order to grapple).
I don’t emphasise it enough in this video but I do later in class – you need to really focus on keeping the lead knee very bent forward to stop kicks to the knee hyperextending the leg).

The Nearside Underhook #HalfGuardPass shuts down almost all #HalfGuardSweeps. These are 2 variations to get to #SideControl or #KesaGatame
Against a standing passer, many guard players will opt to sit up and attack the passer’s lead leg.
Here, I show three options on how to nullify the guard and submit the guard player.

Quarter guard can happen in many ways. Two most common occurrences are in the transition when opponent is escaping from mount or when your mid pass and they’re holding off for dear life.
Regardless, if you find yourself in the situation, this is a good pass to use.
