One of my favorite submissions is a shoulder submissions commonly called the Monoplata or Marceloplata.
But I have a different name for it. I call it the Ugly armbar.
I call it this because it sort of looks like the 1st Armbar I did as a White Belt. That 1st armbar I did back in 2003 was really ugly!
And that’s where the name comes from. I call in the Ugly Armbar.
Fun story, I originally figured this move out on my own. I didn’t see it in an instructional or video. Then later on when I was browsing through some Brazilian Jiu-jitsu techniques. I came across Marcelo Garcia showing the technique.
So much for inventing a new move! 😛
In this BJJ technique video. I show one of my favorite sneaky setups for this shoulder lock submission, which starts from Side Control goes to mount and finishes.
In this setup I sort of sit up back which gives the illusion to the opponent that I’m off balance. I’ve found that many people take the bait and roll towards me.
As they do this I step over and catch the arm and setup the submission.
I’lll show another setup for this Brazilian Jiu-jitsu technique later on next week.
So whether you call it the Monoplata, Marceloplata or the Ugly Armbar like me. I hope you like the setup!

One of my favorite side control escapes, because of how useful it is and how many back-up plans exist in the sequence, this escape can also lead you directly into a couple of different potential submission opportunities. My favorite thing if I hit this escape is to look for the Darce choke. Let me know what you think!

Getting flattened out in Side Control and being stuck underneath someone can be one of the toughest things to deal with as a White Belt in BJJ.
In the video a 6 Week White Belt is having this exact problem. He’s getting flattened out and crushed underneath larger Blue and Purple Belts.
Now as I express in the video. If you’re a BJJ White Belt and you’re against a Blue or Purple Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
There’s probably nothing you can do to deal with it.
Their experience in Brazilian Jiujitsu will typically be too great for you to deal with.
But one of the simple lessons that really makes a big difference when trying to escape Side Control.
Is start by forgetting about the actual escape. And see if you can simply stay on your side.
If you’re on your side, your ability to escape Side Control goes up dramatically.
And I find that my White Belts experience a sharp increase in their ability to escape Cross Side in BJJ by simply focusing 1st on staying on their side.
So if you are experiencing this same issue. My challenge to you is this!
When you’re rolling during your next BJJ class. Just see if you can stay on your side by using the tips described in this video.
Hope the video helped!

And coming soon to On Demand Video and the App Store.

This instructional is the premiere guide to make your side control escapes unstoppable. Mixing moves and concepts, Brent Littell creates a unique study guide to make you a true escape artist. He looks at side control escapes from a completely new perspective, which has never been put together in such a usable and accessible manner. Through the examination of specific escapes for specific side control situations, this instructional creates a framework to help the newcomers identify the type of side control they are in and the escape that works best for that position. Never before has side mount bottom been broken down this perfectly in one easy to use instructional. In fact, it gives you a primer on what to do and when to do it, unlike other instructionals which have a one size fits all answer for side control escapes. Instead of showing you a specific technique, today I want to explain how to use a concept across many different techniques.
Knowing how to build structures for your Jiu Jitsu is extremely important if you want to be energy efficient. You are going to use your bone structure instead of your muscles…
You can build those structures from the bottom position, top, standing, offensively, and defensively.
I show several examples in the video above, and it would be awesome if you could reply to me telling me some of your favorite frames & structures.
Hope to hear from you!

During class this week we put an emphasis on triage and how to salvage a good position once your opponent starts to escape.
This is an important skill and one that is fairly common. In the other videos on this series I show some variations of this where your foot placement is a little more aggressive in maintaining a good position.
