The Switch is the classic wrestling reversal. As the name implies, you will switch positions with your opponent once you complete the motion. I like the Switch a lot, because it is a relative of the Kimura. Nearly every position you can hit a Switch from, you can also hit a Kimura. Sometimes when a Kimura doesn’t work, a Switch does. So they are a good pair to know and have in your back pocket.

Attacking the turtle position can be annoying against a very defensive player. A good way of cracking that shell is to set up a Kimura Trap. It is hard for them to defend this, even if they are shelled up tight, because you are going over the shell, and not reaching inside it. Once you pull them back, their belly is exposed, and all of the submission attacks expose themselves.

If you find yourself on the bottom turtle position, you will be happy to know that you can still hunt for the Kimura from here – with caution. If you are too eager to search for the Kimura without looking for the proper cues, you can end up getting choked fast.

What we want is for our opponent’s arms to be under our arms, and our head over our shoulders and hips. This gives us the option of standing up and of getting a good bite on the Kimura.

The next situation we covered was attacking the Kimura from the bottom turtle position. This is not a great spot to be hunting for Kimuras, especially for beginners. But, if you have a particular set of skills like me, then it can be a great place to catch Kimuras.

The first key is to make sure you keep your opponent’s hands under your arms. If at any point they come over your shoulders, like a seat belt grip, you have to abandon the hunt for the Kimura. However, if you can keep them locking hands underneath your arms by moving, hitting a hip heist or switch, then it gives you time to setup a Kimura.

The second key is to not let your head touch the ground. If you are face first eating the mat, you won’t have the leverage to rip the Kimura, and your opponent can break your grips using their knees.
