Two Random Lessons From My Half Guard Trickery Course
One of the things I enjoy the most is finding ways to punish opponents for their logical responses to threats. In those moments when they think they’ve successfully defending an attack, there are opportunities, and these two are ones that I use when they base out to stop the far leg kneetap in underhook half guard.
Gerry Abas (Satiev’s move) vs The DEEP Underhook! (Takedown)
http://teachmegrappling.com This video introduces you to Gerry Abas. Gerry is a 3 time NCAA Division 1 Finalist and Peterson Grapplers got the pleasure of having him at our summer wrestling camp 2017. He demonstrates a really awesome attack to use against a deep underhook by your opponent. This move comes from one of the greatest wrestlers in history from Russia, Buvaisar Satiev. Enjoy! The most powerful tool in (nogi) guard passing + the smelly armpit concept
What is the most powerful tool in nogi guard passing? You can find out in this excerpt from the Nogi Passing Masterclass.
I also talk about the smelly armpit concept and others that apply to some of the most fundamental principles of guard passing. Understanding those is far more valuable than 50 different techniques without a common thread.

A Trick to Get Underhook Control in the Guard!
Getting the underhook in the guard, especially the butterfly guard and the half guard, is incredibly important because it gives you a huge amount of control over your opponent’s body and also gives you a route to his back. This gripfighting technique to get the underhook is one I learned by watching Eddie Cummings in competition and I hope it helps you too! For more tips check out my butterfly guard playlist on Youtube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPVTmG22ZxE&list=PLyknAhj6gPvJLUJ6sMrbqbUfItYgyNaCf

BJJ Half Guard Sweep Against Wrestlers (Overhook Counter)
This sweep has been a mainstay for my BJJ Half Guard game when pitted against people using the overhook to fight against my underhook when I’m in Half Guard.
Often people who wrestled or have done MMA will use the over hook to counter a low Half Guard position
In this video I show a super easy, but super effective, Brazilian Jiujitsu Half Guard sweep that works great at combating the overhook.
In the video I show what I call a “Re Grip” which essentially means I’m gripping off of my opponent’s grip. Then from there I use my legs in the Half Guard to shift my hips under the person and execute the sweep. Keep in mind that this sweep is not a roll but rather a digging under the person with your hips.
I’ve been able to do this sweep with very large people and was still able to execute the Half Guard sweep.
I hope this video is helpful to you with your Brazilian Jiujitsu Half Guard game, especially if you run into this problem.
