This knee bar setup is super controlling and a solid alternative to a honey hole entry. Good one to use anytime quarter guard happens.

The Back Side 50/50 is widely regarded as the ideal position to finish an Inside Heel Hook from the 50/50 guard, primarily because it keeps your opponent facing away, limiting his defenses.
In this video I break down how Fabian Ramirez transitioned from regular 50/50 guard to Back Side 50/50 in order to submit his opponent at the 2021 IBJJF Worlds No Gi with an Inside Heel Hook.

I’ve been getting lots of requests for a calf slicer video recently, and until this one, I didn’t have a video solely dedicated to this submission. So here is a video on calf slicers set up from most every position. Hope this helps with the mechanics, setups, entries and uses of this versatile and powerful submission technique.

Drilling Single Leg X, Reverse X, Saddle Entry & Leg Attacks.
This drill is fun the first thousand times or so….when I drill something until fun or boring isn’t a factor any longer, then I know it’s starting to compute. People ask me sometimes about how to avoid burnout. I have things that I think are good pieces of advice, but if I’m being totally honest…I don’t know. I’ve been burnt out, and I get burnt out. It comes and goes. You have to figure that shit out. If you want to quit training because you can’t handle that you’re burnt out, then maybe you should. When things are great, it’s easy to keep doing them. When things suck, it’s natural to want to quit. How much do you care?
Anyway…leglocks, amirite?!

This video is a pretty comprehensive guide to all things escaping mount position. This can be one of the most difficult and dangerous positions to find yourself in, regardless of the context, whether self defense or sport. These escapes in this video are some of the best techniques and concepts I have found over the years for dealing with this situation. This honestly could have been much longer, but I feel as if this video contains the most important considerations, and is basically a mini-course. I hope it helps!

The highest percentage takedown in competition, whether gi, no gi or mma is the single leg. For that reason, understanding the mechanics of the single leg takedown is vital. In this video, Mike Cheney of Endeavor Defense & Fitness shows two solid setups for the single leg from an underhook and wrist tie position, one high and one low. Hope you enjoy this and get some good info from it!

The back is the king of positions and what we should be aiming for the whole time, and this video is all about how to submit from there. What started as around 10 back mount submissions turned into several more. So here is my take on some high percentage submission options from back mount. Many of these are gi-dependent, but many are also applicable to no gi. Be sure to check out more on this channel on how to get to the back, and of course Patreon.com/knightjiujitsu has tons more. Thanks as always for watching!

Firstly, I don’t know what else to call this position and I definitely don’t claim to have invented it. This is however a fun and frustrating position with lots of great submission possibilities from it. This is a bottom cradle variation with rubber guard elements, making for a really strong position. Watch the video and let me know what you think about it after you try it out. Thanks as always for watching!

How leglocks and the way to apply them have changed in the last 20 years. I filmed this while editing the Oliver Taza No Gi Leglocks instructional which is now available at https://www.grapplearts.com/taza. Much of the terminology I use comes from The Modern Leglock Formula with Rob Biernacki (https://www.grapplearts.com/leglocks).
The 12 Positions of Modern Leglocking PDF I talk about in the video can be downloaded for free here: https://www.grapplearts.com/main-positions-modern-leglocking/
Also, just to be clear, many of the these ‘innovations’ were already being used by the great leglockers in the 1990’s including Erik Paulson and Oleg Taktarov (from whom I learned a TON), so what I’m really talking about is how these ideas have trickled down and become become more mainstream in the last 25 years.
CONTENTS
0:00 Introduction
1:54 Difference #1: Refinement of Control Positions
8:03 Difference #2: Less Variety of Actual Leglock Finishes
12:52 Difference #3: Focus on the Reverse Heel Hook
14:49 Difference #4:Refined Dig Mechanics
17:51 Difference #5: Improved Breaking Mechanics
21:40 Difference #6: Transitions Between the Control Positions
23:42 Difference #7: More Entries from the Bottom

There is a principle I use all the time when discussing escaping submission attempts, whether early escaping or late escaping. I refer to this as the “Fish Hook Principle” and I explain the story behind why in the video. Most all submission escapes operate under this principle and the rest is just timing and technique, which is simplified by understanding this underlying concept. Hope this helps!

If you’re fortunate enough to get behind your opponent and establish a rear clinch, you need some solid takedown options depending on the situation. These takedowns and transitions in this video are some of my favorites and some I find the most useful and efficient. Let me know your favorites, whether I included them or not, in the comments.
