This is another quick snippet from regular class. We are discussing the Americana (as well as a cool American deflection). This is how to execute it effectively. Hope you enjoy it and let me know how it goes on the mats.
This is a submission I’ve been using for many years that I call the “dirty kimura”.
I like it a lot since i don’t have to give up the underhook to get the shoulder lock.
This means if the lock isn’t working I can almost always go back to a good control position or escape a bad position immediately (if I lose the submission)
It’s especially effective against very strong opponents.

Here is a simple but very effective setup for the kimura from the punch block situation in the guard.

Learn from Rafael “Barata” Freitas, one of the Jiu-Jitsu coaches of UFC bantamweight champion Holly Holm. He teaches his trademark technique, a shoulder lock nicknamed after himself. Here are the do’s and dont’s of the baratoplata.
This is a slick little submission from bottom, side control. The legs lace around the top players arm to form a modified americana with the legs.

Professor Gustavo Gasperin teaches the most common counters for the americana trap defense. The reverse armbar when your opponent tries to extend his arm in order to defend the americana, and the spinning armbar when your opponent moves his arm all the way around to the other side.

Professor Gustavo Gasperin teaches how to set up the americana trap from side control, and goes over some variations you can do, as the shoulder punch to still catch the same submission.
http://teachmegrappling.com This video demonstrates how to perform a “Baratoplata”, all credit due to Rafael “Barata” Freitas. There are many ways you can fly into this position and it is a shoulder lock that is very powerful. Enjoy! If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, please comment below. Brandon Mccaghren of 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Decatur Alabama teaches the Monoplata from the mounted position. This is a great transition for MMA, as evidenced by elite grapplers like Vinny Magalhaes and Shinya Aoki. It may be difficult to pull off this technique from the mount against an experienced grappler, as they aren’t likely to put their hands in this position. There are, however, lots of great entries to the monoplata from other positions that we will cover in subsequent videos.
Hope you enjoy the video. Please subscribe if you do 🙂

This is the fourth video on the omoplata from the guard. This is something you can do when your opponent attempts to roll out of your omoplata and you do the “Re-roll”. The omoplata is one of my favorite techniques and I have a very detailed system to follow for it. More advanced videos to come.
