Today’s question comes from a Blue Belt who quit BJJ training some months back. His reasons for quitting, as you’ll hear in the video, are mindset issues.
So, as I get into the video, I share some ideas from my own Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training as I went through a similar issue in the past. I never quit, but I did experience some frustration and overcame it.
If you struggle with anything similar, then I hope this video helps you out.
Thanks for watching.

Want to improve your timing with your BJJ techniques? Everyone does, right? In this video I’m going to share a simple idea you need to look for, or rather feel for, during your rolling and drilling that will help you improve your timing.
I came across this idea of physical cues when I was a Brown Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. I started noticing that many techniques have this “feeling” of when it’s time to go, and the more I zeroed in on that feeling the better my timing got.
In the video I’ll share the idea with you and I’ll share a few techniques and the physical cues. My encouragement to you after watching is to find the physical cues of your techniques in your BJJ training.
Thanks for watching.

Today’s video is a question from a guys who is technically a “White Belt” but has around 15 years of MMA and grappling experience.
His issue is he feels a certain level of discomfort rolling with guys who are the same rank as him but he has 15x more experience then. Also, when he rolls with many of the higher belts he feels uneasy beating them even though he’s the new guy in the gym.
So, in the video I share a story of situation that happened in my gym that was very similar. It was with a guy who is now a Brown Belt but who started training with us as a White Belt after he stopped fighting professional MMA.
Thanks for watching.

Today’s video is a quick one showing a few of the stretches I like using when my hands and forearms feel like rocks. This used to be really bad when I first started BJJ. It’s not as bad anymore, but after a hard competition match or during days where we focus on a lot of situational rolling from Back Mount I’ll get the locked-up hands a bit.
So, in today’s video I share 4 stretches with you that you could use in between matches or after a tough training session.
This list is not exhaustive obviously. But these 4 have been super helpful to me.
So again, I hope they help and thanks for watching.

When it comes to side control escapes, I have recently shifted my mindset. Instead of approaching the task tactics (with more and better techniques), I now focus on the strategic goal of getting on my side then reinforcing that structure.
It aligns with a mantra I have had for a long time which is: the space I create must be mine to keep. And if I can be successful in achieving that goal of getting on my side with a strong structure, escape becomes almost effortless.
Case in point:
You can see one such example in this video.

I recently got a good question about how to develop the “If this, then that’ mentality and approach that many high level BJJ practitioners have with their styles. So, in the video I’ll give you some ideas to chew on about how to develop your own style and reach a relative level of competence or mastery with the positions or techniques in that style.
The ideas are very simple. But simple doesn’t mean they don’t work. After 23 years of grappling, it’s usually the simplest stuff that makes the biggest difference.
So hopefully if you have this kind of question for your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu then I hope this video is useful to you!
Thanks for watching.

“BJJ shouldn’t be used in a street fight”, “BJJ Doesn’t work in street fights.” I see this kind of stuff in comments and online all the time. I’m sure if you’re a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioner you see it all the time too.
In the video I just wanted to share a few ideas to Chew on when talking about BJJ, grappling and street fights.
I also respond to a comment I got recently where someone said, “you never want to go to the ground in a street fight.”
And after watching the video, feel free to share your own opinion, experience or ideas about BJJ in a fight situation.
