Today’s video is going to be a breakdown of the Arm Triangle Submission in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & MMA and how I would make these 7 adjustments to improve your finishing rate with this submission.
The Arm Triangle is one of my favorite submissions in BJJ, but like most submissions it can be really tough to finish on a competent opponent when even 1 of these 7 details is slightly off.
These 7 adjustments made my Arm Triangle game way better, and I hope they do the same for you!
A lot of these adjustments have come from experience and time. On top of being a coach for a while, there are a few common problem areas where I see my students often struggle.
Many of these details come as answers to those specific common struggles.
If you were having trouble finishing the Arm Triangle, then I hope these tips were helpful.
Thanks for watching.

Today our question comes in from a White Belt on Instagram who wants to be more offensive.
He says that he gets stuck on the bottom playing defense, like most White Belts in BJJ do, and just wants to be more offensive.
He asks how I think he can work on his ability to submit from the back and create some reliable offensive.
I send him back a message and ask him what his go-to defensive strategy is, his go to techniques off of his back.
He replies that he doesn’t really have any go-to’s and doesn’t want to focus on his “go-to” control and defensive techniques, he just wants to score more submissions.
In this video I’ll tell you why it’s more important to focus on developing solid control, guard retention, and defense on bottom, before you can develop a reliable offense, both on bottom and on top.
You have to be able to defend yourself. You have to be able to survive first. You have to be able to play off of your back in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
One of the things that made my top game better (subs and guard passing) was my ability to play off my back, defend guard passes, sweeps, etc.
And this is coming from a guy with a background in Wrestling (so it was uncomfortable for me too, at first!).
Hopefully some of you guys found this video helpful, especially if you were struggling with a similar issue as today’s messenger.

Today I’m answering a recent question from a BJJ Blue Belt named Matt, who says he’s having trouble on top of the Mount Position.
Specifically, he’s struggling when his partners are keeping tight “T-rex” arms to their chest, not allowing him to open up any submissions.
With that being said, I’m going to show Matt, and you guys, 2 different ways to deal with really tight arms in Mount.
One of these techniques will be preemptive and the other will be an option for when they’ve already secured their “dino arms” already.
This is a pretty common position in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and since there’s no strikes, like there is in MMA, these are two good options to help you develop some offense.
Hopefully you guys found this video helpful.

What’s up guys!
Today we’ve got a question that came in from a viewer named Nolan who saw some sort of blog post/video where some coach was saying that the toughest belt to get in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the While Belt, because in his words, the hardest thing to do in Jiu-Jitsu is to get started.
He asks, “Chewster, what do you think the most difficult belt to get in BJJ is? is it the White Belt or is it a different one?”
So, what is the toughest belt to get in Jiu-Jitsu?
This is the question I’m going to try and tackle in this video. But to start, for me at least, it is definitely not the White Belt.
In fact, you just have to show up and go to 1 class and you get it.
Of course, there’s a ton of nuance here, especially when you consider how difficult it can actually be for people to “just start”. I understand that there are countless reasons why someone might not start BJJ, but once they do, I’ll explain why the White Belt is not the most difficult to actually obtain.
Hopefully you guys found some useful insight from this video.
Thanks for watching!

Today’s video comes as a request from a viewer named Jake.
Jake is a white belt and ask for some Arm Bar techniques that work well and are easy to learn for beginners in Jiu-Jitsu.
In this video I’ll give you guys 2 different Arm Bar techniques that can definitely help you out if you’re a white belt in BJJ (or any belt level for that matter!)
For both techniques I’ll point out some minor gripping details that I would use in both the Gi and No-Gi BJJ situations. On top of that, I will teach you some basic concepts to help you hold the position tighter and keep your partners posture broken.
I’ll also introduce some different guard variations, starting from closed guard, like the Diamond Guard, which help me secure my Arm Bars when I can’t catch them quickly & how to take advantage of common mistakes White Belts make when they’re stuck in someone’s Closed Guard.
Hopefully if you’re a White Belt, or really anyone who wants to improve your Arm Bars for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or MMA, then you found this video helpful.

Today we I will cover the topic of Journaling and how I think it can be helpful for BJJ.
The question today comes from Mark who is getting into Jiu-Jitsu.
Mark is 42 years old and like most people his age, he has to make the most of his time when he’s training and like most adult’s, his time is mostly filled with real life responsibilities.
With that being said, he says that he wants to get the most from his training and wants to start journaling. He asks if I have any best practice, I will use for Journaling for BJJ growth.
Journaling can be useful for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & I’ll tell you the ways I found it to be useful, and obviously there’s no one-sized fits all answer here, but I’ll tell you what has worked for me.
Also, I mention a journal in the video. If you’d like to get one use the link below:

Today’s video is a little different. I’m not showing you any BJJ technique or training advice. Instead I’m showing you a delicious option for “ice cream” if you’re trying to cut weight or just not eat junk good.
The ice cream is super simple. It’s. . .
-Protein powder
-Almond milk
-Vanilla extract
-Monk fruit (if desired)
For whatever reason, anytime I have to cut weight, I always want ice cream. This recipe that my wife and I got from out friend hit’s the spot and it’s literally just good ingredients.
My friend Erin has a blog/website with some other really good recipes if you’d like to check it out:
https://www.erinstimac.com/blog
Anyways, I posted a video about this on instagram and a lot of people seemed to like it so I didn’t want to leave you guys out.
The gadget I use in the video is a ninja creami. If you don’t have one, it’s not cheap, but it could be worth the investment if you struggle with sweet stuff sometimes.

What’s up guys,
Today’s video is going to go over some drills that a few students and I have been working on to maintain the Back Mount in Jiu-Jitsu.
Sometimes people BJJ will get really good at escapes, so we work on techniques to counter those escapes, and even how to take advantage of openings they give during their escapes to secure a submission.
I’ll show you guys a couple of submissions including the Rear Naked Choke, the Bull Dog Choke, etc.
P.s. These are some drills that we do to warm up before we get into the actual technique portion of the class.
Hopefully, if you were working on back mount or just needed a good place to start, that these drills were helpful for you.

Today we’ve got a question from Luke, a White Belt, who is having a problem that many White Belts in Jiu-Jitsu are going to have.
I had this problem as a White Belt, and per many of your messages, many of you also have.
So, he sends me a message and says he’s done 8 months of BJJ, 4 days a week, and he’s a younger grappler. He states that when he rolls, the higher belts will make remarks after the roll, scolding him, saying something to the effect of “stop being a spazzy White Belt/you’re rolling too hard/chill out, etc.”
He even says that he takes the comments to heart and tries his best to ease up and be more relaxed when he rolls.
But, even when he does this, the comments continue to come.
He’s frustrated with the situation and ask if I have any ideas on how to fix this issue.
In the video I’ll try to give a couple of solutions that can help out Luke and any other white belts who are running into this problem.
Thanks for watching, hopefully you found this video helpful!

What’s up guys,
Today’s video is another one being filmed here in Costa Rice with Hero BJJ retreats & my Black Belts Chad Hardy (YT & IG: @ChadtheBeastHardy ).
So, today Chad’s going to show a sweep from the De La Riva, which he calls the “Magic Sweep”. The higher your partner goes when attempting this sweep, the better it works.
It’s called the Magic Sweep because when done correctly, it’s pretty dang effortless.
To note, it’s a pretty quick sweep in Jiu-Jitsu, so take caution when trying this on your partners. Start slow!
Chad is going to do an in-depth breakdown of the technique and show you guys a few details to help you in both No-Gi & Gi-Jiu-Jitsu.
He will also show you guys how to course correct the technique when you run into lengthier grapplers, like himself, in a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition or practice.
You find & can train with Chad at his gym: Guardian Mixed Martial Arts

This is an absolutely brutal way to finish the north south choke from north south!
In the video, my “little brother” from another mother Chad Hardy shows me a variation of the north south choke while we were down in Costa Rica for the Hero BJJ Retreat.
1 variation used his ribs to literally make my head feel like it wanted to pop off. For all you skinny guys, this could be a great option.
The other variation uses an X across the back to finish which finishes the choke as well and puts a bit of pressure on the neck as well.
If you’re a little on the longer and lankier side, then these could be useful finishes for you with the north south choke, as it’s typically seen as a short, stocky, strong guy move.
Happy hunting with that submission.

Today’s video is a short one.
Today we’re going to talk about being a higher belt in Jiu-Jitsu & forcing yourself into uncomfortable positions in practice.
For many of us, Black belts/higher Belts, we run our gyms. We may be the best guy in the room and that means that we have to be extremely intentional about how we get better.
Whether that’s putting ourselves in bad positions, only going for certain attacks, etc. We have to constantly find small ways to improve.
Jiu-Jitsu is like a muscle, the more you put yourself in those uncomfortable positions, the easier it is for you to get out of those bad spots when you run into trouble in competition.
At the end of the day, Jiu-Jitsu is about getting comfortable in uncomfortable situations and putting yourself in bad spots will make a huge difference.
Anyways, just a quick idea to chew on.
Talk to you guys soon.
