Seph Smith “The Reverse De la Riva Almanac”. This is a very effective and simple technique for the Reverse De la Riva guard. If you can do the basic scissor you can do this move.
Renowned instructor and competitor Joseph “Seph” Smith is an accomplished grappler and Ryan Hall’s first black belt. Professor Smith developed a very effective Reverse De la Riva guard system that renders his opponents guessing which direction they will be swept or if they are going to be submitted.
In this instructional DVD series, Professor Smith helps you build a solid understanding of how the half guard is the foundational structure of a well-rounded Reverse De la Riva game. Seph starts this instructional talking about and demonstrating concepts, theories, and tactics for an effective half guard. As you get deeper into this course, Seph takes you down the path of forcing your opponent into the RDLR and into his web of different traps. If you want to develop or refine your RDLR game this instructional is for you.

Big thanks to Tony for helping out while rob is away doing things for the army Tony is a retired vet. And has had to re learn how to walk two times. He is built of steal and still training?
The cross face is crucial to add into your arsenal. It is a great tool to flatten someone out. The battle of half guard is ether standing out of the half guard to try and pass or staying low and trying to flatten out your opponent. If they are flat it makes it hard for them to move their body and attack.
I’ve been playing around with the second technique where I go across the throat and it has been working really well for me. A lot of times it leads me to taking the back. You’ll see this series when you try it out. I don’t try this every single time like I said just when the opportunity presents itself

A really basic attack from the closed guard that everyone should know

The x Guard is a great tool to have in your game. As a tall lanky grapple it allows me to stretch my opponents out and gives me a plethora of options. Anything from attacking the legs to the simple sweep we covered today.
The flower sweep or pendulum sweep which ever you’d like to call it is a very powerful sweep from the closed guard but at the high levels grapplers will have amazing balance. Even at a blue belt level grapplers will be more aware and ready to post.
This is when you hit them with the one two combo for you sweep or leg attacks.

A rant about how standing up from guard is just as valid a technique as sweeps and submissions. And when it comes to self defense the technical standup is absolutely critical! Check out https://www.grapplearts.com/selfdefenseguard for more examples of how the standup gets integrated into your guard game, and/or check out the related videos below:

I love the flower sweep. Cool thing about this sweep is I learned it the week of that tournament I just showed you. Not only did I hit it once I hit it 4 times that day!
I was thinking wow this thing really does work haha their are different grips you can use for this sweep as you’ll notice in the first part of the video. You can use and over hook grip like I did in the tournament or you can simply control the wrist. You are just trying to stop them from posting out and blocking the sweep.
I use this still anytime I feel someone starting to stand and it will keep them to where they have to pass low and play my game.

The log splitter is a nasty guard break. Mostly for the fact that you are pretty much shoving your knee up the persons butt haha it is extremely effective and is one of my favorites I use this a lot in no gi and it is very effective against taller grapplers because their will be more room to get the knee through.
Frustrating your opponent can be a great way to get in their head sure they can break your posture but if they can’t do anything with it they are just as frustrated as you are. Most of the time this will lead them to just open up and go for anything and that’s the opportunity you cash out on.
