This video I discuss the difference between playing the deep lasso position and using a shallow lasso which I generally prefer. The deep lasso is more of a specific attack, where the shallow lasso is more commonly used to transition to all sorts of other guard positions as well as use as a defense and initial entanglement. I also go through the utility and aspects of the meregali deep lasso in between legs variation. Let me know if you guy have any future techniques questions and requests.

It’s important when you train to have a conceptual framework in which to place the techniques you learn. Otherwise you just get overloaded with moves and have no ability to use them correctly or fully. Here, I discuss something I teach all my students.
It’s a simple way to think about how they should approach using guards and how they should prioritize which guard they use for various situations.

This video I go through some of my favorite ways for initiating control in the guard. From the start of the match it’s important that you always have a game plan the first step is your initial contact grips and entry guards the you play and then build off from those positions. You need multiple options as your opponents can stand in many different ways which requires different options as the grip you prefer will not always be available.

The X Guard position in BJJ is well known for it’s sweeping ability and transitional quality. Meaning that it can link up to several other positions quickly.
A while ago I posted a video where I showed a Oma Plata from the X Guard. In the comments of that video I saw someone say that they were unaware of the fact that you could use X Guard for submissions.
Again, he said that he always thought of the position as a sweeping guard instead of the ability to submit.
In this video I show another submission setup off of a sweep from X Guard.
It’s a simple idea.
It’s a Kick Back sweep from X Guard that lands the person onto their side where we can slide right into a straight ankle lock.
The position we transition to is often called Ashi Garami but I’ve heard other names for it. Call it whatever you like, it’s a nice addition to the end of your sweep.
I also touch on the idea of using the straight ankle lock / ashi garami in IBJJF. It’s a legal position but you definitely have to be careful for the reasons I state in the video.
Hope the video is helpful to you!

I love this pass! I use it against the really Gumby guard players like myself haha
now in order for this to work you need to expose the back. Than connect your chest on the back by connecting your hands and pulling down. It’s a little trick but effective.
So that is your goal at first. If you miss the back than you aim to get to some sort of a leg drag or mount. Using a butterfly hook may sometimes help this if you can’t our turn your opponent.
