What’s on the chopping block today? Here is a sequence I like from Americana attempt to head and arm choke, with a pit stop at a nasty shoulder lock when the opponent answers the phone to defend.
Amazing rashguard comes from the @jj_neck & @endeavordcf collab
Don’t get caught in head and arm chokes…or any submission, for that matter. But, since it is inevitable that you will get caught, it is important to have late escapes, as well as early ones. This video details the sequence of escapes and the procedure for applying them effectively to counter the head and arm choke.
Always be as safe as possible in training and competition. I hope these details help. Thanks as always for watching!

These three escapes for the head and arm choke (arm triangle) give options for the most common energies you’re likely to encounter. Honestly, the 3rd escape is the highest percentage, but oftentimes, the others are necessary to elicit the energy for it to work optimally.
In this video, I go through a roll I had with a brown belt friend and student, and comment on the specifics of what happens, good, bad and otherwise. Let me know if you find this format helpful, and if you would like to see more like this in the future.

The Chopping Block is the common popular name given to the high mount position with the head and arm isolated. This powerful position is useful for setting up not only arm triangles, but arm locks, punch chokes and back takes as well. In this video, I show details on how to secure this position, as well as some solid options for submissions and taking the back. Hope you enjoy.

The Darce choke is an extremely popular head and arm choke variant for good reasons. It’s extremely versatile, not only because of all the routes to applying it, but also because of how well it combines and the back-up plans available from it. In this video, we look at the basics of setting up the Darce, a few pathways to get to it and how to transition out of it to other submissions. Hope you like it!

Here are a couple of slick and sneaky submission setups from side control as shown by my friend and UFC fighter, Mike Pyle. This Americana and Arm Triangle are pretty high percentage from this position. Let me know what you think, and be sure to give credit to Mike when you tap your training partners or opponents in competition with these!

In this video, you will see the Co-Founder of Team Nova Uniao, Andre Pederneiras, teaching the number one submission of the NU MMA Team, the KATAGATAME (Head/Arm Choke). This video was filmed on the backstage of the MGM Arena only a few hours away from the beginning of the UFC 183.
Later on that night (01/31/2015), Thales Leites (NU Fighter) defeated Tim Boetsch with a Katagatame with 3:45 seconds of round two.
Congratulations to The BJJ Mental Coach supporter Thales Leites and Andre Pederneiras!
Enjoy!
