The Americana gets a bad rap these days for being a low-percentage submission. That basically just means you don’t currently see it hit often in high-level competition. But ultimately, the Americana / ude garami / double wrist lock (lots of names for it) is a valid and powerful submission. It just needs some details.

In this video, we look at setups and finishing mechanics for this arm lock, as well as common mistakes that prevent it from working at higher levels. I hope this is helpful, regardless of your experience with this submission.

This is usually the first attack I go for from the North South position. There are a million ways to finish the Kimura or to transition into backtakes, leglocks and armbars, so if you learn this setup it ends up being a very versatile hub position!

Here is an effective and very sneaky application (both gi and no gi) of Ude Garami that you might find useful. Ude Garami translates to Arm Entanglement but it’s also called the Bent Armlock and Kimura. No matter what you call it, this is an effective armlock.
