If you’re a bigger person in BJJ. 1. How can you make your flexibility better for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. 2. How do you roll with smaller people when you’re self c
Being a big person in BJJ isn’t a bad thing.
As long as you’re being safe on the mat. You’re actually providing an awesome service for your training partners.
You help your training partners get used to the pressure associated with bigger training partners, opponents or attackers.
In this video I talk about why having a bigger training is actually very useful and is actually a good thing for your BJJ training.
This video came about because of a question I received from a BJJ White Belt who is a bigger guy and is struggling with figuring out what he should be doing for his BJJ training with his lighter training partners.
So if you’re a bigger man or woman in your BJJ gym. I hope this video is helpful.

The Half Guard in BJJ is by far one of my favorite positions in Gi or No Gi. There’s so many options, grips and adjustments to mix it up with.
In this video I show a really STRONG grip to use in the Gi.
I put an emphasis on strong because it really locks the person down and creates crazy pressure from the bottom of Half Guard.
I’ve found from years of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu that once someone knows that I’m a Half Guard player.
They tend to try and get away from me.
This Back Strap grip doesn’t allow them to do that.
I’ve used this grip in rolling and competitions with plenty of success.
The gi loops around their back and puts an immense amount of pressure which completely locks the person up. If they try to push back or get away.
It’s usually not an option.
In the video I show one simple option that allows you to get to Back Mount and create a strong angle.
But there are so many sweeps and options you can add into your Brazilian Jiujitsu game with the grip.
So if you’re a BJJ Half Guard player and you’re looking for another option to throw in to your game.
Try the Back Strap grip.
Hope the technique helps!

Have you ever dealt with someone who was overly aggressive towards women in BJJ? If so, how did you deal with it?
Recently I received a question from a BJJ assistant coach who is dealing with someone who is hyper aggressive with the female training partners in their Brazilian Jiu-jitsu gym.
He says that the pattern has been created where he will get submitted by a woman and then becomes hyper aggressive and has injured or negatively affected all of the female training partners in the gym.
He says his instinct is to motion to the head coach to kick the guy out. But sends me the question to get my thoughts on the matter.
In this video I discuss how I would certainly not give the guy the boot, at least not yet.
Unfortunately, I’ve dealt with this sort of situation and have been a bit of a hyper aggressive person in BJJ myself.
And in some cases people are completely ignorant to their misgivings and rough, unnecessary and reckless aggression.
I also share how I personally dealt with a similar situation that happened in my gym years ago.
Thanks for watching!

This Half Guard technique is by far one of my favorites. And honestly, I think it’s an absolutely beautiful technique for understanding how the Hip Shovel works in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
The Hip Shovel is a movement which in involves getting your hips under someone else’s. This is required to efficiently execute many Half Guard sweeps and transition to positions like X Guard, Deep Half Guard, etc.
In this video you’ll see Steve as my partner. Steve joined us on the Pura Vida BJJ and Surfing retreat this past year.
During our week of training. He was interested in the sweep and learning how to use Half Guard for his Brazilian Jiujitsu game.
So I wanted to make this video with him to help.
The Giggler as we call it within our association, many people call this the “John Wayne” sweep, is so useful. We call it the Giggler because it works off a proper response from the person on top.
It just requires careful timing and being smart not to give away the grips early.
If you’re trying to make your BJJ Half Guard better, I hope this Sweep is useful for you both as a stand alone technique but also understanding the technical aspects of the Half Guard position.
Thanks for watching!

The Double Under Pass in BJJ (sometimes called a Double Stack Pass) is an awesome option that has a ton of variations.
1 common counter to the Double Under Pass, as well as many others in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, is going to the Turtle position.
By moving to the Turtle position the person is able to avoid points in a points based Brazilian Jiujitsu match. And in a overall dominance situation. Being on top in Turtle is far less dominant than Top of Side Control or Mount.
In this video I answer the question about what to do when someone Turtles after hitting them with the Double Under Pass.
I demonstrate one of my favorite Double Under Pass variations that I use in No Gi when someone is a very “Leggy” guard player Meaning they’re legs are very hard to control.
After the pass I show a way to setup the Back Take following the person going to turtle.
It’s a great way to get to Back Mount and immediately works right into a rear naked choke or similar submission.
If people are going to Turtle on you during training / rolling, competitions or otherwise. Then I hope this Bjj Back Take from the Double Under Pass works for you!
Thanks for watching and remember to subscribe!

Now that you have a sweep to use let’s look at some situations. Most of the time when people are standing up they are going to get a cross-grip. The grip that we are using is also a cross grip on the sleeve. So you simply need to reverse the grip by rotating your wrist.
If they go double collar grip to lift you just hook their leg and it will stop them from lifting you off the ground than work to get the sleeve.
If they are standing with both hands on your wrist do the first move I showed pull forward while circling your wrists out.
P.S no liabilities

The Over Under Pass in BJJ has been one of my favorite options for Guard Passing since I was a Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
But the BJJ Over Under Pass definitely has some serious counters available for the person on the bottom if they know how to use them.
2 of the common counters to the Over Under Pass can be a “Bro Roll” and the Kimura. You may have a different name for the roll but that’s what we call it.
In this video I explain how I’ve encountered both of the problems in my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training that our friend Johnathan has had as well.
The big idea in the video is to help you avoid 2 of the mistakes or problems I had with the Over Under Pass.
So if you’re using this Guard Pass or trying to add this into your guard passing game in Brazilian Jiujitsu. I hope the video is useful!

Getting back into BJJ after a long layoff can be tough. For numerous reasons.
In this video I answer the question Jacob sent to me about his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training.
His question was
“I trained BJJ for about a year and then had to take a break for school reasons and it’s been another year since I’ve trained. I’ve forgotten a lot of passes, submissions and guard work. How do I get back into the swing of things going back to the gym?”
So in this video I share details about the 1st lay off I had as a Blue Belt and the frustrating problems I experience when I came back.
I discuss the most frustrating issue I dealt with which primarily stemmed from my identity that I had developed prior to leaving the gym.
I was really good, and when I came back to Brazilian Jiujitsu training with everyone in the gym. I had lost my step a bit and it was a bit of a blow to the ego.
So if you’re in the middle of a period of time off from BJJ or maybe you are getting back into BJJ after a time away. Hopefully this video is helpful!

Here is a great Gi based Choke setup for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu when you have Back Mount but are losing the position, or are letting the person escape in a calculated way.
The video for today was inspired by a recent match sent to me by one of the viewers.
He’s a White Belt, and almost had the Bow and Arrow choke which is very popular in BJJ. But he lost it as he was unable to get his second leg free.
For this video I show a Bow and Arrow choke setup I like using as a bigger guy. This will get rid of the position where our buddy got his leg stuck during his Brazilian Jiujitsu match.
The choke setup can be used from Back Mount either if you’re losing the back.
or
You can use the setup to lay a trap for your opponent. If you secure the lapel grip correctly. The person will be unable to turn towards you which will lock the person in place. This will allow you to come up and finish the choke from a top position.
This is beneficial for a BJJ tournament situation because you maintain dominant position.
It’s also beneficial as it gives your numerous other options involving chokes and armlocks.
Give this submission a try, I hope it helps with your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. And thanks again to Anselmo for the question.

Are Neck Cranks (and in particular the Can Opener) Dick Moves in BJJ?
Well, as always, what classifies a Dick Move is usually if the person’s intent who is executing the technique.
That said, when it comes to day-to-day training in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. My objective is to train hard. But make sure my partner is healthy and safe.
And Neck Cranks have the ability to do some nasty stuff to the neck and the discs in the spine. And because of that I often avoid them.
Because typically speaking, once your neck is injured. It’s never quite the same. So for myself and my Brazilian Jiujitsu training partners.
I avoid them for the most part.
I typically stick to submissions that I can finish cleanly, that aren’t dependent on pain to get the submission.
That said, it is important to understand how neck cranks work and how to defend against them in BJJ so that you are able to adjust to them.
In this video I show some simple counters to the Can Opener technique.
Hope it helps!
