Quarter Mount and Deep Half Guard can be tough positions to deal with in BJJ. In this video I share 1 simple Leg Over technique to pass them.
In Quarter Mount, sometimes call Quarter Guard. Often times the only thing stoping you is their grip on your ankle. And in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu it can be tough to pry that foot out due to the strength of people’s thighs.
So the 1st option with this technique is against this.
In the second use for this technique. I show how to get to it from Deep Half Guard.
Deep Half Guard is another position to pass. Especially when someone gets under your hips.
By using the same Leg Over technique, it gives you another Guard passing option.
So if you’re struggling to pass the Deep Half or the Quarter Mount position in Brazilian Jiujitsu.
I hope this technique is useful!

The Gift Wrap or Perfect Mount as I’ve heard it called is a terrible position in BJJ! Well. . . terrible for the person on bottom.
I always assumed that the reason it was dubbed “Gift Wrap” was because the person is literally wrapped up lift a gift for you.
And when you decide to unwrap this gift in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu it’s with a submission.
Now, it’s a tough position for sure. And your best bet is to not get stuck there in the 1st place.
But if it happens. In this video I share a simple technique that you can use to pry yourself out of the Gift Wrap from Mount so that you can continue working and rolling.
It’s not an easy escape and there are submission counters. But it works.
I also show how you can use this same technique principle when you are working from Half Guard and you’re getting crossed faced.
So if you’re having either of these issues. I hope this video is useful for you!

It can be hard to balance weight training and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. I know that for me, I struggled with it at a point in my life where I was getting bigger and stronger and was chasing numbers in the weight room.
But then struggled with my BJJ training because I was too big and beat up for sufficient rolling and work on the mats.
And in this video I talk about this in the hopes to assist our friend Peter who is a Powerlifter getting into Brazilian Jiujitsu.
He says that since training Jiujitsu he’s noticed that his lifts have dropped in their overall poundage.
And his question is two fold. . .
1. How to Balance BJJ training with his Powerlifting?
2. Should he readjust his expectations for training?
I also touch on the current program I follow for lifting in order to support my BJJ training.
If you’re someone who’s really big into lifting who’s also pursuing BJJ. I hope this video is useful for you and your training on the mat and in the weight room.

Do you like Mount or Side Control Better in BJJ?
This is the question I got from Shay who feels better from Cross Side / Side Control or whatever you call it. But he wants to be better from Mount.
In this video I start by sharing how I prefer and preferred Side Control in BJJ as it was very natural for me coming from Wrestling.
After that I share 2 of my favorite tips for building a stronger Mount in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
Both of these tips have made my Mount position better for Brazilian Jiujitsu and have also helped a number of my students.
In both tips if you pay attention you’ll notice that I’m dealing with the Bridge. Which is the primary means for most people to knock me off balance.
By taking away the bridge or by adjusting to it. I can make sure take away one of their best ways to off balance me and leaves me able to finish my attack on them.
I hope this video helps with your Mount position in BJJ.

Whether you’re using collar chokes, lapel chokes or any sort of choke that uses the gi in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
The focus is the same. Create pressure on the carotids using the fabric either directly against the neck or to support the hands.
In this BJJ technique video you’ll see Adam and I sharing a drink of bourbon. But beyond that we dive into a few tips when using a Baseball Choke.
You can watch a more in depth Baseball Choke video here:
This question comes from Titus who is struggling hitting the choke asked for some tips.
In this video I give specific tips on how to improve the Baseball choke
but also how to make any Brazilian Jiujitsu collar choke tighter by focusing more on the wrist.
I’ve found that this is one of the most important details.
I used to struggle with collar chokes because I was using the wrong part of my body. The arms. When I began to focus on the wrists and the push with them.
It dramatically improved.
So if you’re struggling to finish your collar chokes in BJJ practice or competitions and want to make them tighter. Give the tips in this video a try!
I hope it helps.

What do you do when you feel like you’re not ready for your BJJ promotion?
This is the question I got from Matt who is a 50 year old Blue Belt and was recently informed that he would be up for his promotion to Purple Belt.
In most cases this would be a good thing. But as soon as Matt was informed about his potential promotion. He instantly began to have feelings of doubt in himself.
He says that he’s in pretty good shape. But being 50 years old is tough in BJJ. And he struggles rolling with the younger, stronger practitioners even if they’re less experienced.
In this video I go through and share the idea of imposter syndrome. Where we feel like we’re faking it or that we aren’t good enough. I also share how at every single belt I was promoted to I had the same feelings of inadequacy in relation to my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu abilities.
Jordan Peterson talks about this in his recent book that we are tyrants to ourselves. Someone else could make the same mistake as us. But since we made it, we’ve very hard and judgmental.
Nothing wrong with pushing yourself to be better. But at the same time there has to be a limit.
If you’re struggling with being your own worst critic. I hope the video helps!

Today’s question comes from White Belt our friend who recently had a freak accident outside the gym and now has to take 1 month off BJJ training.
He’s super down about it as he’s been making a lot of progress with his BJJ. And he’s wanting to get some exercises that he can use for his down time.
In this video I steer away from this situation a bit. I know that a lot of people don’t want to lose their progress or the skill they gained in BJJ. And with a small downtime, you won’t.
But something more valuable that can come from this period of inactivity is the contrast of not being able to train.
Meaning, when you get back to training and you’re having a bad day, bomb a tournament or whatever. You can go back and think about what it was like to not even be able to train and then be thankful for the opportunity to get out there on the mats. You’re healthy and not injured and there will always be tomorrow.
This is something I picked up when I was younger and really helps give more appreciation to your BJJ training.
Thanks for watching the video!

Recently I did a video on some stretches and movements that you could use for recovery following BJJ training.
The video was a little longer with detailed explanations of the stretches. That video is here: https://youtu.be/9y-5f1B2HtI
But if you’ve already watched the video and just want a refresher to take you through the stretches then you can watch this one.
In the video there are around 8 basic stretches I use following a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu class. There are more stretches that I use. But this at least is a small group that you can easily try on your own.
If I was to put down every stretch or corrective exercise that I use. This video would be too long.
I tend to do these exercises either at the gym after a class to cool down and keep my muscles look.
Or sometimes I’ll do them at home after a shower before I head to bed.
This is also a great chance to listen to an audio book or something like that.
Hope the stretches are help with your BJJ training.

A really frustration situation in BJJ is when a long legged person locks up Full Guard, squeezes and doesn’t open.
It can be incredibly hard to open someone’s Guard who has really long legs.
As I’ve expressed in other videos. The full guard was one of my worst positions early on.
In this video our friend Andrea, asks a similar question for her Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training.
She wants to know how to break full guard when the person has long legs and squeezes.
In this video I show a really simple Thrust Choke that can be used in order to get the person on the bottom to open up.
It’s simple, powerful and really uncomfortable for the person on the bottom. And if they don’t respect the submission attempt. It’s possible for them to go unconscious.
And as I explain in the video. From my experience in Brazilian Jiujitsu. When you apply the choke. Guard players will often open up to get out of the position and choke.
So if you’re having trouble breaking full guard in BJJ. Give the choke a try!

In this video from one of our recent Brazilian Jiu-jitsu No gi classes. I hit several takedowns during the class. But as I tried to play around with a few new mount techniques. You’ll see that I wasn’t successful.
Which isn’t a bad thing. I gave up space and was unable to hit the new moves I was working towards. Something we should all be doing from time to time in BJJ.
Hope you enjoyed the video of our rolling down at my gym Derby City MMA.
