I’ve received a lot of questions. Not necessarily related to BJJ. But they come from people who follow me through Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
The question they ask is about producing content through videos, blogs, podcast, etc.
In this video I share a story from a recent email I sent out.
It was a story related to a guy who came and did a private lesson with me.
You can receive my Monday – Friday email by going to this link:
http://www.chewjitsu.net/focused-jiu-jitsu-13-page-ebook/
During our BJJ private lesson we rolled, broke down his game and then talked for a while after.
While we were talking we discussed a situation he was in related to a potential business he was thinking about getting into.
In regards to the business he says that content creation is a part of it and wanted some tips.
In this video I share a tip that I found useful in relation to my own content creation when it comes to writing blogs, making videos, podcast, etc.
It’s nothing new or magical. But I think it’s helpful. Because people seem to be focused on what they think people want to see rather than moving from a place of genuine enthusiasm.
Not a BJJ question. But I hope it’s useful to you!

Should do you BJJ before you lift weights? That’s a question I get a lot from people who watch the channel.
In this video I share a Friday session we had at the gym. It started off with BJJ and then Joe myself and a couple of the guys went over to do a lift.
I already knew what was going to happen. I was going to be weaker.
Along with making the muscles looser which is not optimal for strength or safety when lifting. It also depletes a lot of the materials your body uses for muscle performance.
During the weight training session I share a supplement Joe and I use after really tough training sessions, especially if we have to train again soon.
And we also answer some questions from my Friday Instagram Q&A. We got a little silly with some of the cussing so if that bothers you, then you may not want to watch.
But all in all, I wouldn’t recommend doing Brazilian Jiu-jitsu before lifting.
And if you’re wondering what I typically do. I try to seperate them by several hours. Always doing lifting 1st if possible.
Hope you enjoy the video!

Iron sharpens irons. This is a saying we use often in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu which I believe originated from the Bible Proverbs 27:17.
The old saying sounds good but what does it mean?
There are obviously endless interpretations of just about any maxim or idea. But when I see the saying iron sharpens iron I see it this way. . .
If in order for me to grow, I have to have someone as hard, tough or as skilled as me.
With your BJJ training. If you only have people who are unable to really push you. You may find your game getting stagnant.
When you roll with your training partners in the gym and they stop your BJJ techniques. You should be almost excited it happened.
Why?
Because just like going into the gym and lifting weights where we break down and stress the muscles so they get bigger and stronger. When we are doing Brazilian Jiujitsu when someone stops our techniques from working. This is a similar situation.
Once they beat or stop our techniques during training. We then are forced to rise to a new level, to look for new ways, and it makes us more creative as well physically and mentally stronger.
So iron sharpens irons. If you’re in the gym and one of your training partners stops your techniques.
Be thankful, and look for a way to improve and do the same to them so that you can both develop further.

The North South position in BJJ can be tough to escape.
If you think of Guard as having our hips in front of our opponent. North South is literally the opposite. They’re about as far away from the hips as they can be without getting up and running away.
This in turn can make it difficult to regain a decent position from the bottom.
This is why it can be such an awesome position for Guard Passers against long legged grapplers.
Circle towards the head and get to North South and you’re further away from those legs!
But what if you’re the person on the bottom of North South. What can you do?
Well in this video I share two North South escapes you can use in Brazilian Jiujitsu.
We’ll pay close attention to avoiding some basic submissions from the position and explore 2 escape techniques that are executed from different styles of North South.
If you’re getting stuck in this position then I hope these techniques are useful!

When are you just training hard and when do you cross the line into the realm of a mat bully?
This is a question that came from our friend Tim who was recently accused of being a bully in his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu gym.
He also makes a reference to mat bullys in a recent video I did.
The video our friend Tim was asking about was here: https://youtu.be/diTEcRp1aOg
In this video I look at the situation where Tim who is a White Belt in BJJ was applying pressure to another White Belt. The aim was to get a response and open up a armbar submission.
The big idea I try to zero in on is that it’s not always what you do, but where does it come from.
Meaning are your actions on the mat coming from a place of desire and passion for Brazilian Jiujitsu, or are you actions fueled by neediness to win and insecurity.
I’ve personally been on both sides of the fence in relationship to this issue. I’ve been the needy guy who was overly aggressive and only cared about winning.
Now I train hard, but always with a focus of excitement for training and an attempt to better myself and my training partners.
If this is a situation you’ve found yourself in, I hope this video is helpful for you and your BJJ training.

So I get asked a question very often and I simply cannot answer it.
It get’s worded something like, “What’s the best technique in BJJ?”
If you’re experienced in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu you’ll know right off the bat that there isn’t one. The idea of a “best” technique is ridiculous.
If there was a best technique or position or anything like that. We’d all be doing that and only that.
But the reality is that Brazilian Jiujitsu offers a wide range of techniques and positions that favor certain body types and styles of play.
You only have to look around your gym or a competition where you can see a variety of different styles of BJJ in use. And the best part is, they all work!
It’s not like a sport such as basketball where there is a somewhat uniform look to the players.
Instead BJJ offers a wide range of body types and they’re all doing well.
So if you do decide to ask a question. Please do not ask me what the “best” technique is because I cannot give you that answer.
The best for me may not, and probably won’t, be the best for you.
Instead if you give me a specific problem that I can help solve related to your BJJ training or competitions. Then I can focus on that problem and try to be of service to you.
This is simply because I want to be of use to you and be helpful. And if I answered a “best” question I’d not be completely honest.
Thanks for all the questions you do send and I look forward to growing with you!

Strength training for BJJ is something I get lots of questions about.
I have a hunch this is because my meathead-ness is expressed often in BJJ.
One exercise that is excellent but at the same time can be a bit of a bugger for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioner is the Squat.
The Squat is such a strong exercise for the whole body with endless variations.
One reason the Squat is so problematic for people who do BJJ is their hip tightness. This is caused by the constant flexion on the mat and the inconsistency with stretching to loosen and exercises to strengthen extension.
In this video I share a great piece of equipment the Belt Squat machine. This is the type of squat I like to do and it’s easy on the lower back.
There are a number of different ways details and benefits I share in the video. But if you’re a BJJ athlete or practitioner who wants to build stronger legs but avoids the traditional back squat because of pain in the lower back.
I’d simply invite you to try this exercise if you can. I’ve found with a number of our members in my gym that they’ve been able to use it with no issues whatsoever and have received an overall strength benefit.
This allows them to get stronger and still be ready for their BJJ training.
Hope this video was helpful!

If you’re a Half Guard focused BJJ player or ever get into the Dogfight position then you know how troublesome a well placed overhook can be.
In this video we’re going to get into this position and look at a couple of options.
Today’s BJJ video request from Gui who is playing Half Guard in his gym but is getting mauled by the overhook / whizzer when he attempts to come up for the sweep.
In the video I give 2 different options that can be used to counter the Overhook.
The 1st is simple limp arm / lazy arm. I probably use this technique the most. It’s just such a strong attack to throw into the mix. And I’ve used it over and over again.
Both in BJJ training in the gym and competitions.
The 2nd option is a roll under sweep using the “regrip.”
If you’ve watch any of my Half Guard technique videos you’ll see me showing the re grip sweep over and over again.
And it’s a great counter to Wrestlers and those types who try to use overhooks to counter sweeps and movements.
This is because they are literally giving you the grip you need to make the sweep effective.
So if you’re struggling from the Dogfight position or getting smashed in this position with the overhook. I hope the techniques are helpful.
