Getting the underhook in the guard, especially the butterfly guard and the half guard, is incredibly important because it gives you a huge amount of control over your opponent’s body and also gives you a route to his back. This gripfighting technique to get the underhook is one I learned by watching Eddie Cummings in competition and I hope it helps you too! Can’t sweep with the technical lift? Calm down, for the X-guard is very versatile. Instead of stretching both legs, lower one of them and unbalance your opponent with the tripod sweep.

As an opponent tries to pass your de la Riva guard, change to the X-guard, tying a stretegical knot in their brain. It’s what Rafael Costa teaches in this exclusive lesson from Renzo Gracie Online Academy (RGOA). Find out more at www.gallerr.com/rgoa

BJJ Drill to Create Movement & Attacks from The Guard
Sometimes to create the openings for a submission or sweep (or even just the ability to stand up) you need to get your opponent moving and unstabilised. This is one of my favorite drills to create that movement – it’s a great warmup drill with a lot of applications.

Open Guard Advice for Beginners
The open guard is an essential position in BJJ, but it can also be very confusing for beginners. In this video I show you the two most common errors people make when they start incorporating this position into their game.
Here’s a checklist of the most common forms of open guard: https://www.grapplearts.com/a-glossary-of-guards-part-2-the-open-guard/
And here’s a breakdown of the Tripod Sweep technique I mentioned in the video above: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1p-2qBPL9tM
Launch Opponents With This Sweep
I love this sweep because who doesn’t love lifting people in the air am I right? Just me alright cool…
This sweep can be used to lift someone really high in the air if you have longer legs and drop them flat on their back or shoulders depending on how they react.
Now I’m the video I wasn’t lifting rob as high because of my recovering meniscus tear. But it is an option!
You can be safe and do the little lift like I was doing or you can make it extreme and go for the big lift and drop to make everyone go “ohhhhhhhhhhh”
I also plan on doing an add on to this sweep soon when I’m back from Cali. so stay tuned!
P.S. no liabilities

SPY CAM – Butterfly Guard Iowa Sweep
We have been doing a bunch of Spy Cams here in Las Vegas, but what about my hometown in Miami?
I got you fam. 🙂
My brother Marcos Avellan got some spy cam footage of his own here covering a really cool blend of Wrestling, Judo and Jiu Jitsu. It is a combination of the wrestling Iowa with the Judo Sumi Gaeshi from the butterfly guard that results in a wonderful sweep. I’m disappointed I haven’t thought of it myself!
You can transition to and from the Guillotine choke, which is another plus to this move. Try it out!
