I learned this sweep as a white belt and have been using it ever since. It works really well with off balancing a bigger opponent.
Sometimes you will see me just sit guard and try this on bigger opponent so I save my back from trying to wrestle them. Give it a try and let me know what you think!

Here is a way I have found helpful in explaining and illustrating some basic guard types to students. There are so many guards and ways to use them in Jiu-Jitsu that I can’t even imagine how long a comprehensive list would take. But this video outlines some very common ones that I think practitioners should familiarize themselves with.
For more detailed instruction on the use of these and lots of other stuff, check out Patreon.com/KnightJiuJitsu. I really appreciate the support!

When you have your opponent in your closed guard you don’t want it to be a fair fight. If you can make an angle then you get a big advantage that can be turned into attacks like a sweep, a submission, or taking the back. Check out this 3 step movement I learned from Erik Paulson that helps you generate this all-important angle!
If you’ve been doing BJJ for 2 years or less then you should consider downloading my free checklist of jiu-jitsu positions and techniques. More info at http://www.grapplearts.com/book

Getting the underhook in the guard, especially the butterfly guard and the half guard, is incredibly important because it gives you a huge amount of control over your opponent’s body and also gives you a route to his back. This gripfighting technique to get the underhook is one I learned by watching Eddie Cummings in competition and I hope it helps you too! For more tips check out my butterfly guard playlist on Youtube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPVTmG22ZxE&list=PLyknAhj6gPvJLUJ6sMrbqbUfItYgyNaCf

Can’t sweep with the technical lift? Calm down, for the X-guard is very versatile. Instead of stretching both legs, lower one of them and unbalance your opponent with the tripod sweep.

As an opponent tries to pass your de la Riva guard, change to the X-guard, tying a stretegical knot in their brain. It’s what Rafael Costa teaches in this exclusive lesson from Renzo Gracie Online Academy (RGOA). Find out more at www.gallerr.com/rgoa

Sometimes to create the openings for a submission or sweep (or even just the ability to stand up) you need to get your opponent moving and unstabilised. This is one of my favorite drills to create that movement – it’s a great warmup drill with a lot of applications.
