Train with me and Icy Mike at Hard Ready this year! Register your spot here – https://fittofight.com/product/hard-ready-7-charlotte-nc/
Icy Mike from @hard2hurt channel here on YouTube, sucks at Jiu-Jitsu (his words, not mine), which led to a discussion of what submissions exist from bad positions, particularly bottom side control. I just so happen to have several of those, so I was happy to show him some in this video. Hope these are helpful, or at least the video is entertaining.
If you aren’t following @hard2hurt then you need to do that as soon as you finish watching this video!

I get asked a lot about submissions that work well against bigger, stronger people. This is a more complex question than it might seem. Of course, if you are exponentially more technical than the other guy, size doesn’t matter as much…but it always matters. So, in this video, I flip the question around and address what I feel are submissions that are initially harder to catch on larger opponents, along with why and what might be better.
Thanks to Griffonrawl Combat Sports for allowing me to film this and for having me come in for another seminar. Excellent place to train. And also, thanks to my good friend, Eric Lance, from Synergy Martial Arts in Newton Falls, Ohio, for helping me in this one.

De la Riva is one of the most popular guards (along with variations of it) for competition in gi, no gi and even to a lesser degree in MMA. Understanding not only how to set up sweeps and submissions from this guard, but just how to energetically play this guard in general, can mean the difference between having a lot of success with it as a valuable tool, or failing miserably every time you try to access it. In this video, I discuss some extremely useful attacks with DLR, as well as ways to set it up and control it well. Hope you enjoy.
Please make sure to turn on notifications if you haven’t already, because the YT algorithms are super weird sometimes. Thanks!

These three escapes for the head and arm choke (arm triangle) give options for the most common energies you’re likely to encounter. Honestly, the 3rd escape is the highest percentage, but oftentimes, the others are necessary to elicit the energy for it to work optimally.
This video focuses on some options off the front headlock on the ground. Whether this was from a sprawl, reversal, snap down, etc., these are some good submission setups from this position. Apologies for the mishaps with the audio on this one, and hopefully it isn’t too distracting. Thanks as always for watching!

Kickflip turnover to knee on belly guillotine to back take to reverse triangle. I love this sequence and was fortunate to get to share it and some other gems with the wonderful folks who attended my seminar this weekend at Brady’s Jiu-Jitsu Club in Fredricktown, Missouri. Grateful to Brady, Guy and the rest of the crew for having me out. It was a blast and can’t wait to get back next time.
I have short, thick legs, so triangle chokes are not a strong point in my game. But I do love the side triangle!
It is very simple to setup from the TV position, and once you have it locked up, it is very difficult to escape. I like to think of it like a front headlock, but using your legs instead of your arms. Plus, you have the Kimura controlling his other arm, so your opponent his no hands free to defend themselves with, and their legs are too far away to help.
We can finish the choke, a modified Kimura, or a wrist lock from the side triangle. Or, we can get to top position, which allows us to attack the choke, the Kimura, the figure four arm lock, or the spear of destiny, a viscous fist choke.

In today’s BJJ technique video I share some useful triangle choke finishing details. It certainly isn’t all of them but it’s some basics to get you going if you’re having trouble finishing your triangle. If you get all of these tips down, I’d be surprised if you don’t finish your triangle choke with a higher percentage.
The triangle is one of the strongest submissions in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu when done right. And these tips come from my own experience and that of my students who have very good triangles.
And even if you’re not super long and can’t lock your legs deep for the triangle. I’ll give you an adjustment to finishing the triangle with slightly shorter legs.
Anyways, good luck with using the details and happy hunting for your next triangle choke.

If you’d ever like to train with the team and I. Check out my gym Derby City MMA in Louisville,KY.
I started using this grip a long time ago to enhance control in closed guard with the gi. It was a fantastic discovery, but like most good ideas, it was already something that existed, as I saw others using it later on. Regardless, it is a powerful grip that can lead to some great submission and sweep opportunities. If you’re not using gubber guard yet, try it out. And if you are, what are some techniques you like to use it for?
My friend Jake Shields was going over the Cross Face Hip bump to triangle attack yesterday, and then it occurred to me I could use my foot to give me extra options like the Puppet Master.
I really like this position, because it has so much control and options, and it is close to impossible to escape once locked in. Give it a try and let me know how it goes for you. 👍

People tend to have strong opinions (often negative) about starting rolling from the knees. In this video, I discuss pros and cons, my opinion and options from starting rolls from knees and otherwise. Hope this is helpful.

Do you get stacked when you go for triangles from guard? It is the most common defense, along with posturing out. In this video, I offer a couple of solid options for countering an opponent who attempts to stack you to escape your triangle choke, and also an option for countering someone posturing out of your triangle. I hope these are as helpful to you as they have been to me over the years.

Not what I was planning to teach at my recent seminar, but when people have questions, you gotta answer them. The over-arm wrap trap, is a tricky and cool option the back to get the triangle or crossover arm bar. Thanks to @griffonrawl_combat_sports for having me out, and thanks to @xmartialofficial for the amazing gear.
