This modification to the “Threading The Needle” exercise has been a great way to perform a more dynamic movement to address multiple areas at once.
I have been able to use this movement to get a solid warm-up or cool-down for the shoulders as well as the mid back.

My training partner Adam was dealing with groin tightness and pinching in the hip from a recent injury during training.
I performed a quick assessment to check his restrictions and then took him through the technique.
Afterwards, his hip had increased mobility and he no longer had the pinching pain. This technique has been really useful as a great was to improve hip mobility and pain which has led to improvement in my guard retention and positioning during BJJ.

Two reasons you want to learn Olympic style kettlebell snatches on top of your traditional snatches.

1) Olympic style snatches involve ankle extension (heel off the floor) as opposed to a traditional style with a heel on the floor. Nearly all athletic movements involve extension of the ankle, knee and hip. So, it’s important to train movements with triple extension.

2) lifting the kettlebell without a big backward swing, requires a much quicker and greater recruitment of muscle fibres, ie a greater CNS response, thus resulting in better power development.

One suggested set of progressions to get to Olympic style KB snatches:
– good single arm swing
– good single arm clean & high pull
– good traditional snatch
– good traditional snatch with ankle extension
– finally get into Olympic style KB snatches

Once you go beyond 15s, the load is no longer high enough and you’re getting grip strength endurance (which is also a valid attribute to train). But for maximal strength, use higher intensity loads not just for strength but….

Tendon strength and development. Our connective tissue plays a huge role in performance, injury prevention and longevity. So, ensure you have enough high intensity loads in your grip strength training. Particularly on the fingers, crimp holds and hub holds are two of my favourites. .

Hip mobility is extremely important in overall health and Jiu-Jitsu. The mobility in the hips allows for improved guard retention, ability to transition to different submissions, and to keep you low back safe.
This video shows a quick variation using a band to perform circles as well as a “windshield wiper” movement to promote a good hip warm-up, increase flexibility, and improve motion in the hips.

Chewy and I briefly discuss when to train through injuries and when to train around injuries and how training around your injuries forced us to work on other aspects of our jiu-jitsu.

This looks really weird, I know….but read on for an amazing exercise to work the under trained transverse abdominis. Critical for spinal stability and hip & lower back function. @jack_jitsu @paulbjdo .

The key to this exercise is to NOT create tension in the outer abdominals.

Place a small weight of 5-10lbs just above the belly button. Then, by breathing from the diaphragm AND relaxing the outer abdominals, DO NOT ALLOW THE WEIGHT TO DROP.

This exercise is easy if you tense up the outer core, but incredibly challenging when done correctly. After 30s or so, you’ll feel your ‘inner’ core shaking.

Activation of the transverse abdominis is key in providing stability and a solid foundation for the spine and hips. When it’s not activated, the prime mover muscles try to also act as stabilisers, which over time can cause a whole host of problems.
