Today’s video question comes from a White Belt named Jon. (Had to look it up after the video! Sorry about that Jon!)
He’s a BJJ White Belt who loves using side control so his question is about my favorite types of side control techniques or something I think everyone should know.
So in this video I share 1 of my favorite side control movements in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The movement is simple and incredibly effective at creating opportunities for the back and submissions. I teach it to my White Belts and it’s part of our fundamentals curriculum, but it’s something I use all the time as a black belt in competitions and training.
So if you like side control, you need to know this movement!
Hope you enjoy the video.

Today I will show you a part of my technique session from one of my Jiu-Jitsu Gi classes at my gym, Derby City MMA.
I reviewed with the students how I like to apply pressure and attack the arm in reverse side control.
We review a few different attack options that work well in Gi Jiu-Jitsu, No Gi Jiu-Jitsu, and even MMA.
This set of attacks are some of my best and I hope you found this useful.
Thanks for watching.

Today’s video will focus on one of the most frustrating pins in BJJ, the Side Control.
Specifically, it will focus on escaping side control.
To watch a narrated version of this video, use the link below:

You will see me do rounds with my Jiu-Jitsu students here at Derby City MMA, in Louisville, Kentucky. Specifically, I will be rolling with my Brown Belts & Black Belts.
I haven’t done a rolling video in a while and was excited to do another one. I have a side control escape series coming out soon too, so you can see some of the techniques from that instructional being used here, in live training.
If you’re struggling with side control escapes, you can start zoning in on specific rolls like you see in this video to help you improve in those uncomfortable areas.
On Sundays, we have an open mat so it’s a great time to choose a position and try to work through it like I decide to do here.
Hopefully, you found this video helpful.
Thanks for watching.

7 Reason Your Side Control Escapes Suck for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
What’s up guys, lots of you guys are having problems with side control escapes, and as a follow-up to my “Why your Guard Retention Sucks” video, I thought we’d add side control escapes for BJJ to the mix.
I’ll go over a handful of tips that were really useful for me back in the day, and even now as a seasoned BJJ Black Belt, and tips I constantly give my students to help them improve their ability to get out of Side Control.
Hopefully, if you were struggling to escape side control, then you found this video helpful.

Today’s question comes from Levi Schwartz:
He asks for me to show a back take that he saw me hit while watching a recent BJJ rolling video of mine here on the YouTube.
The Back Take came from a scramble with one of my Jiu-Jitsu Brown Belts, Charlie, and in this video, I’ll show you how I set it up & how you can look for it, should you have the chance to do it while rolling.
The position we work from to get into this back take has a lot of names in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
But it essentially started from my partners hip switch, from side control to reverse side control, which exposed his back and gave me the space I needed to execute the technique.
I did this technique in the Gi, while rolling, but you can modify it for No-GI Jiu-Jitsu as well, which is what I do in this video.
Hopefully you guys enjoyed the technique!

In today’s video I’ll show you 5 BJJ side control positions and how I hold them and use them to setup other techniques. I think this will be helpful to anyone from White Belt to the advanced ranks. You’ll see that I prefer some positions for pinning while others work better for setting up submissions or transitioning to other positions.
In the video I show. . .
– Head and hip
– Head and arm control
– Kesa Gatame
– Reverse side control (without arm)
– Reverse side control (with arm)
These are certainly not all of the side control positions you can use in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu but they do make of several of the most fundamental you’ll need. And in all honesty. These make up about 90% of the side control style positions I use as a Black Belt in both competitions and hard rolling.
So if you’re looking for some help with your side control then I hope the positions in this video are helpful to you.
Hope this video is helpful to you.

Recently, I did a seminar at Evolve Combat Academy in the UK and part of the seminar focused on my Knee Ride Control and how I use different knee mounts on all parts of the body to control and fatigue my opponent as well as open attack opportunities.
Jerry Ñyos who used to train with me at Ft. Bragg wrote me after he saw pictures from the seminar and told me that he based a lot of his Knee Ride game on what I taught, especially a double knee ride position I call the “Preacher.”
I asked him to show some of the things he likes to do and he shot a quick video on how he uses the lapel mixed with the Knee Rides.
I also included some quick clips of a little part of my Knee Ride Flow on top. I will be eventually shooting a full DVD on my whole Knee Ride game so keep an eye out for that.

In December, I traveled to Mirco Wendt’s Academy, Monkey Gym Schwerte, to teach a 2 Day Seminar for just the Academy Students.
It was on Pressure & Control: two aspects of grappling and fighting that I feel are not really focused on or understood anymore.
This is how Mirco described it after:
Roy emphasized Jiu Jitsu is the art of control and not the art of Submission.
One of the main tools for control is pressure, so Roy covered the fundamentals for that kind of game, like proper weight placement, body misalignment, air restriction and more…
We were all amazed cause we we had never experienced that kind of pressure before. Great thing about that approach is, the top game player almost never used lots of strength or grips, instead it was absolute effortless to control the bottom person with correct alignment of the own body, misalignment of the opponents body and weight distribution.
What I as a plus 40 year old bjj hobbyist love about that kind of game is, you can play it as young gun, but also as a matured grappler over 40/50, because it doesn’t depend on attributes like strength or flexibility: everybody can do it.
Perfectly in relation to sustainability and longevity, great for self defense, competition or mma.
And, in a personal Message, he told me the immediate success he had with what he learned:
“Hey mate. We played with the “Pressure” game… it is so fantastic.
We rolled for control and I tapped the guys only with pressure and control and without Submissions ?
This happened never before although I am training for almost 10 years now. Thanks a lot for all the gold nuggets.
We really could up our games again after your seminar”
Contact me if you wish to schedule a seminar with me.
I will be putting these details and concepts and techniques and many more into my upcoming Pressure and Control DVD going soon

Side Control Artillery Online Course: https://www.mmaleech.com/sidecontrolartillery/
The Side Control has always been one of the most powerful and dangerous positions in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
It’s extremely hard to escape from when done correctly, and it offers a multitude of attacks that can easily overwhelm any opponent.
Unfortunately, today many students only see it as a stalling position, where they hold their opponent down in order to score points, and hope to transition into the mount or back controls.
If you are one of them, it’s time for a change… it’s time to start utilizing the Side Control as an ATTACKING position, and finish the match right there!
Side Control Artillery is packed with over 50 techniques, covering both Gi and No-Gi.
Over 3 1/2 hours of how to precisely choke, strangle, break arms and legs from the Side Control position.
Not only that, but also how to properly distribute weight, identify points of control, and transition back and forth from the various types of Side Control: Kesa Gatame, North & South, Mouse Trap, Chest-on-Chest, Reverse Kesa Gatame, and Knee-on-Belly.
CONTROL. OVERWHELM. SUBMIT.

There are some fairly simple concepts that you can use to effectively hold Side Control. While I don’t share all of them. I at least touch on some of the basics in this video.
Starting at the hips and moving up to the shoulders and neck.
In side control you need to have something connected or controlling the hips. Whether that’s a regular side control, 100 kilos, kesa gatame, reverse kesa gatame. It all has something that is controlling the hips.
Moving up to the idea of shoulders for side control. If you control the shoulders. You force the back to stay flat. If the person is flat on their back, it will be very difficult to escape. Most escapes from side control in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu involve coming up to the side to imitate the escape.
The last side control concept I share in this video is that of the neck. By controlling the persons face and neck. They are locked in place. If the person is facing away from you and is unable to turn towards you. They will not be able to get their escapes going effectively. At least not by turning towards you.
So if you’re looking for some ideas for side control in BJJ. Watch the video and hopefully some of the concepts listed in this video will be helpful to you.
