Training BJJ after an injury or surgery is always a worry any grappler has. I’ve had a couple of surgeries and numerous smaller injuries. And anytime one of these happens I always wonder, “how’s training going to be when I get back?”
In this video I answer a question from a guy who is getting ready for meniscus tear surgery on a torn piece of cartilage.
In general meniscus tears are rather common and I’ve seen plenty of them in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
During the video I talk about some of the warning signs that a meniscus injury is brewing and how to proceed with it.
In my experience our bodies often try to tell us that something is up and we don’t listen. We don’t stretch, we don’t do anything strengthening we just keep doing everything exactly the same. And then something eventually goes wrong.
If you’re getting ready to have or have just had a meniscus surgery. I hope the video is helpful to you and your Brazilian Jiujitsu training. If you don’t train Brazilian Jiujitsu, no biggie, I hope the video is still useful.
And as much as it sucks to be broken or injured. Try to take the lesson away about what your body is telling you.

One of the toughest question for a BJJ coach to answer when asked by a student is, “What do I need to work on?”
This seems like it should be an easy question for them to answer. A high level Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioner often has hundreds and thousands of techniques stored away in their body ready to dispense.
And this lies the problem. Too vague a question and too many options to choose from.
If you brought your car to the shop and told the mechanic, “Hey can you fix my car?” but you never identifies what was wrong with it he’s going to have some trouble.
But if you come in and say, “Can you fix my car, the brakes are making a loud noise when I use them.”
The mechanic can immediately look to find the issue.
And your Brazilian Jiujitsu coach isn’t different in this sense. They need some specific problems or questions to be of the most use to you.
And so if you want to get better at grappling and you want to approach your BJJ coach with a question.
First you need to put some thought into your game to figure out what you’d like to ask.
With a more specific question your BJJ instructor can be more specific with their answer rather than give you the ole, “Keep training.”
I hope this helps if you had a situation like this.

In today’s video we look at a basic way to off balance the Guard Passer when they start to smash our De La Rive Guard.
We are using the off balancing technique as a response to a person smashing into our De La Riva Guard and passing our guard.
In the video I show the situation that was explained in the question from one of the viewers and then demonstrate an easy way to counter it.
Even if you do Brazilian Jiujitsu and play DLR and have not run into this issue yet, you probably will at some point. So the technique could still find it’s way into your BJJ training or competitions.
Hope the video helps!
