Receive BJJ Tips Monday – Friday:
http://www.chewjitsu.net/focused-jiu-jitsu-13-page-ebook/
In today’s video I answer a question about BJJ training from our friend who is a Blue Belt in BJJ. He says that he enjoys rolling with the higher ranking belts inside his gym because they are a bit safer.
But the issue there is that he is almost always playing pure defense.
He enjoys rolling with the white belts and less experienced people because he can execute some offensive techniques. But the issue with them is that they aren’t as safe as the higher ranks.
So his question boils down to this. Do you have to train with white belts and less experienced people in Brazilian Jiujitsu, of can you just roll with the higher ones?
In my experience it’s good to have a mix, as I’ll explain in the video.
Against higher ranking belts you learn what good Jiu-jitsu feels like and you begin to zero in on your defense.
But it’s still important to focus some of your rolling attention on people less skilled than you. Because against these people you get a chance to play around with more offensive based techniques.
In this video I share a story from my experience with a friend who got way way better at Brazilian Jiu-jitsu once we had new people in the gym to train with.
Hope you enjoyed the video!

Mat burns on your toes is a real problem you will deal with early on in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
Similar to the way a callous develops after years of lifting weights. Mat burns initial start but eventually are covered up by hardened skin that is resistant to the burns.
In today’s video I answer a question from Max who is having trouble with mat burns on his toes. He says his BJJ training is going great and he doesn’t plan to stop. But he wants to know if I have any tips for dealing with mat burns.
He’s tried taping them up but the tape seems to fall off during sweaty rounds of rolling.
So in this video I share a really simple fix to covering up your mat burns so that you can roll but don’t have to mess with lots of tape or other forms of bandages.
Hope this helps some of you newbies out there with the beginnings of Brazilian Jiujitsu and the mat burn that comes with it.

People new to BJJ are often nervous about training with upper ranks because they feel like they are wasting the Upper Belt’s time.
Alternatively, Some people have the false belief that in order to be the best they have to train exclusively with the best, highest ranked people. I discuss why I believe both ideas are flawed.

This video came from one of our BJJ open mats a while ago.
Jess (my girlfriend) has been training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu off and on for a number of years.
I was in a particularly silly mood as you’ll see during the roll.
The video doesn’t give away any mind boggling new techniques or anything. But I figured I’d share it because it does show something important.
PLAY.
While there is a time to be serious and hard with our BJJ training. It’s also valuable to be have fun and just play around. The rolling doesn’t have to be for all out progress or some new skill. It can be simply just playing around.
In mammals play is often how we are wired to learn. And it’s only as we humans get older that play is frowned upon as a mode of learning.
Anyways, I’ll get off my soap box. Enjoy the video!

As part of my BJJ seminar experiences I like to offer more than just a technique demonstration and then leave.
So during my time in Florida. Sonny and I setup a seminar experience that lasted 2 days.
This video is a Vlog showing some parts of Day 1.
Day 1 which is shown in this video consisted of a big open rolling session followed by Q&A.
Then on day 2 we did a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu seminar with techniques and all that normal stuff. Following the seminar we had a dinner together. It was a great time.
In this video you’ll see some of the rolling with all the people at Gracie Bradenton.
Everyone on the mats was incredibly nice and welcoming. I had a great time getting some BJJ training in with them and then hanging out afterwards.
If you’re ever in the area. Check out Sonny’s gym at

I hope you enjoy seeing some additional Chewjitsu rolling videos. 🙂

I got asked about how to become more creative with BJJ. This question comes from our friend who is doing really well.
Things are moving along in a good way. His techniques are working just fine. But he wants to adapt things to create his own style like he sees others doing.
In this video I’ll talk about a rather uncreative way that creativity comes about in your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu game.
And it starts with the idea that techniques spread like infectious diseases.
For example.
I got thrown this Saturday. And not just with any throw. . .It was a beautiful throw.
It came at the hands of my buddy Dru ( a brown belt) who was in town this weekend.
He’s from south Florida and trained with Cyborg. And the throw he hit me with he learned that from Cyborg. Cyborg taught him this throw both by instruction and hitting him with it during rolling.
Now when he threw me in front of all of my students, did I get mad? Nah I actually laughed told him it was a “pretty” throw and kept rolling.
And then after we got done rolling I had him show me the technique so that I can drill it!
This is how techniques spread. From one person to the next like an infection or disease.
Each infected person making the technique their own.
Now with any disease after it gets cured or treated. It begins to adapt, right?
The same happens in Brazilian Jiujitsu. As you add new techniques to the mix. Your training partners will adapt to stop your moves and submissions. And then you’ll be forced to adapt them to new situations.
This adapting is a point where creativity often comes back in. Not by sheer creativity but from necessity.
I hope you enjoyed the ramble!
