This past weekend at the ADCC & CJI events I met a lot of you guys who were new gym owners.
One constant issue that I heard younger gym owners running into was, especially if you were a competitor, was this:
You feel driven to improve your students’ skills but don’t want to let your own skills worsen.
So most young coaches run into this dichotomy of self-improvement & selflessness in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Today I’ll try to give my best solution to this problem, and if you’re a young coach then I hope you found these ideas in this video helpful.
Thanks for watching.

Today’s video will focus on one of the most frustrating pins in BJJ, the Side Control.
Specifically, it will focus on escaping side control.
To watch a narrated version of this video, use the link below:
https://www.chewjitsutraining.com/sidebreakdown
You will see me do rounds with my Jiu-Jitsu students here at Derby City MMA, in Louisville, Kentucky. Specifically, I will be rolling with my Brown Belts & Black Belts.
I haven’t done a rolling video in a while and was excited to do another one. I have a side control escape series coming out soon too, so you can see some of the techniques from that instructional being used here, in live training.
If you’re struggling with side control escapes, you can start zoning in on specific rolls like you see in this video to help you improve in those uncomfortable areas.
On Sundays, we have an open mat so it’s a great time to choose a position and try to work through it like I decide to do here.
Hopefully, you found this video helpful.
Thanks for watching.

I recently watched a podcast with Demetrious Johnson, DJ, Might Mouse, or whatever other name you’d like to use…
He was a former UFC Champion, One FC Champion, and one of the best grapplers in MMA.
Recently on a podcast, he said Jiu-Jitsu was harder than MMA. The clip is in this video.
He specifies how much harder Gi is than No-Gi too.
In the combat sports world people crap on Jiu-Jitsu. In the Jiu-Jitsu world, people crap on the Gi. It’s interesting to hear that an MMA legend has the opinion that DJ does.
I agree with him. Sort of…
I’ll go into this idea of “harder” a little deeper into the video and explain why, in my experience, both are difficult in their own way; specifically, how MMA is, in my experience, more physically demanding, and BJJ is a bit more complex in the sense of depths of technique.
Hopefully you found this video interesting, just as much I found the topic at hand.
Thanks for watching.

Today’s video is about one of my Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu students who is feeling the “magical power” of the Blue Belt.
All jokes aside, he is having something related to the Blue Belt. He’s seeing some serious jumps in his game.
When I was watching him, he looked way better than he normally did. He’s noticeably becoming more fluid and purposeful.
Even rolling with him he felt super dangerous.
After our roll, I told him he felt like he really Improved. I asked him why he felt that way. He said, “Well, I don’t really feel like I have any pressure on myself lately.”
This is a super interesting thing to hear, as most people who have recently been promoted feel the opposite. They usually feel a massive amount of pressure as a newer, higher, belt rank.
I’ll talk about times I accepted certain uncomfortable situations, let the pressure off myself, and how these things made me perform much better.
Whether it’s BJJ, MMA, Wrestling, Jiu-Jitsu, or anything else you do, today’s topic is an interesting exploration into “AH HA Moments” that tend to come from a more relaxed state (like my recent Blue Belt).
Hopefully, if you’re putting a lot of pressure on yourself, then you found this video helpful.

Today’s video is going to be a bit different.
#1 This is a call-to-action video. Guys, please trim your fingernails & toenails.
#2 if you’re new to Jiu-Jitsu and want to find some eye protection, this will be useful.
This idea came about because I was scrolling through the internet one day, and found a question related to a student of mine.
So, the question was basically about eye protection. The guy who asked it had some previous injuries that left him seeing only about 5% through one eye. He wants to make sure he doesn’t damage it even more and wants to protect the 1 good eye that he has left.
He was also wondering which type of eye protection he should get.
Lastly, he wanted to know what the culture of eye protection is in BJJ, if people would get pissed at him wearing it, etc.
Recently, one of my students, Brandon, got into a leg lock shootout with a crazy training partner when visiting a gym somewhere else. In the end, he was kicked in the eye and left blind for days as a result.
His doctor basically told him that he should not roll again unless he wears protection as it can permanently damage his eyes if something bad like that happens again.
He had gotten a pretty bad corneal abrasion that left him with an insane infection in his eyes.
Now he always trains with goggles & wears head gear to help keep them tight while rolling.
Hopefully, you found this video helpful.

P.S Here are the goggles Brandon uses
