The culture in BJJ has a lot of people who use marijuana/cannabis/weed regularly as something that helps open up their creativity during training or relax them at night. In today’s video I got a question from our friend who has friends who say that smoking marijuana before training opens up their game and always them to be more creative. And he’s curious what my experiences with it and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu are.
I preface this whole video with the fact that I don’t smoke regularly. I’ve done it a few times and don’t dislike or like it a ton. I’m just neutral with it. And if you’re an adult, you can do whatever you want to do, and you should have the right to. That’s why this is an opinion and not some hard stance.
But in the video I do share some possible apprehensions I would have if you decide to smoke for creativity purposes. I have these same apprehensions towards alcohol, caffeine and other psychoactive drugs that we consume on a regular basis.
I know that many people have strong feelings for or against weed. That’s fine, I don’t. Just sharing my opinion on the idea as asked by a viewer.
Thanks for watching!

Rory Van Vliet shows how to shut down chokes and back takes when you’re in the turtle position. From The Guard Retention Formula – https://www.grapplearts.com/guardretention, the incredibly comprehensive and ground breaking instructional coming soon from Grapplearts.com
Triangle Chokes are one of the most effective submissions from the bottom positions and can be a huge problem for any top player or guard passer. In today’s video we have a question regarding just that situation. Our friend Nick who is a wrestler type who is coming into BJJ is getting caught in triangle chokes left and right and he’s wondering if I have any tips on dealing with the situation.
In this video I share tips on both a triangle choke defense and how to defend it. I used to struggle with the same problem as a wrestler who would get caught in triangle chokes while passing guard. I also show how I corrected the issue.
I also share how I like to look at the triangle as a position which has multiple stages. I consider 3 stages of triangles to be a starting point which I explain in the video.
From there I talk about some tips to escape the triangle in stage 1, or a loosely locked triangle. I’ll work on escapes for the future if in a deeper position.
Hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

How to go from the bottom in a smashed Kani Basami position to the top and finish the match with a heel hook from the 411 position with the talented Oliver Taza (grab my PDF guide to leglocking positions here for free: https://www.grapplearts.com/main-positions-modern-leglocking/)
Recently I did a video about Half Guard and getting out of a flattened out situation. Many of the comments in that video said the technique was helpful. But I did have 1 that said the video was too complicated.
In the comments section Assaf wrote: “Way too complicated. I got lost. Can you break it down to separate videos. One technique per video. And slower. This is fundamentals. This is where I always get lost. I’m so bad with all these rules. Show each rule. Don’t just say the rule. Please. Thank you 🙏”
So I wanted to do this video to share with Assaf, and anyone like him, how I digest information and fight against things being overcomplicated.
In this video I’ll share the key habit which is rewatching and re-attempting to put the information to use over and over again. I won’t watch a video once. I’ll watch it over and over again for multiple days. I’ll become almost obsessed with that technique until I either get it working or decide to move on.
Hopefully the story I share in the video illustrates this point well enough and helps you with your own consumption of BJJ instructional videos.
Btw, here is the Half Guard video I referenced in case you want to watch it:
