Should Gi and No Gi Jiu-Jitsu Ranks Be Separated?
This is a question that I received from a viewer recently.
He recently saw a coach on the internet tying a belt around a student who didn’t seem to train in the Gi.
He questions this because of the various nuances and differences between the two similar but unique versions of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Thanks for watching.

What’s up guys?
I want to talk about something that may be ruining your enjoyment of Jiu-Jitsu…
It’s an extremely frustrating MYTH, and I’m here to bust it.
This myth makes you feel like you’re getting worse, even when you’re definitely getting better.
I’m not going to go into too much detail here, but if you do BJJ and are feeling down about this particular issue, I hope you found this video helpful.
Thanks for watching.

Today we’ve got a question from devlostworkshop here on YouTube, and he says, “He bruv, I recently started doing Jiu-Jitsu. Do you have any tips or insight on how to improve your breathing?”
This is something he, and most newer people, deal with.
Most White Belts, including myself, struggle with it. I’ll give you a quick tip to help your breathing and instantly feel like you’ve increased your cardio capacity.
If you train BJJ, then hopefully, you found this video helpful.
Thanks for watching.

Recently, I got an email from “Bob,” a 54-year-old blue belt who trains at a more sport-oriented Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym.
During a roll with a young college wrestler in his 20s, he got injured, which has made him question whether he wants to continue training in BJJ.
With that in mind, he started looking into other options and found a Gracie University Jiu-Jitsu gym about 30 minutes from his house. He’s considering giving it a try.
He says there are aspects he likes, but he’s also concerned it might be a McDojo.
He reached out to ask what I think about Gracie University gyms.
So I give my bearded opinion on it. And if you train at a Gracie University gym, feel free to drop your comments with your experiences.
Hopefully, you guys enjoy the video. As always, thanks for watching!

These are 10 things I have personally done to improve my Jiu-Jitsu and ideas I’ve seen my own students implement to improve their game too.
Hopefully, you found the ideas in today’s video helpful.

Today’s video question comes from a BJJ Black Belt who said he feels McDojo.
He said at his previous Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym he achieved a black belt in 7 years based off attendance. Now, he trains at a new gym and isn’t up to the skill of the BJJ practitioners there.
At this point the black belt is ruining his Jiu-jitsu training and completely sucking the fun out of it for him. To the point where he went from 4-5 days a week at his old gym to 1-2 days at the new gym, and if he does train he only does no gi so he doesn’t have to wear the belt.
I share some ideas for “Bob” in the video and if you’re experiencing a similar issue I hope it helps you as well.
Also, here’s the video about how I gave up my Purple Belt mentioned in the video:

In today’s video, me and my student @brandonreed3x talk about transitioning from Wrestling to BJJ.
We’ll discuss what Wrestlers need to let go of to excel in Jiu-Jitsu, how competition differs, and how Wrestlers can speed up their progress to have more success in the sport of grappling.
Brandon and I come from Wrestling backgrounds, so we thought it’d be a good topic of discussion.
This is only part 1 of this series. So be on the lookout for the second half.
Thanks for watching.

In today’s video me, and one of my students @brandonreed3x are going to go over some of our favorite Knee-Friendly Takedown options in BJJ and Wrestling.
Both Brandon and I were Wrestlers, both have also worked with lots of older grapplers in Jiu-Jitsu.
These 2 takedown options are great as they’re low risk and high reward wrestling for BJJ options.
Not only are you saving your knees, but they don’t put you at much risk for counter submissions, or at least not to the same degree as a Single Leg or Double Leg Takedown.
Hopefully, you guys found these takedown techniques useful.
Thanks for watching.

Today we’ve got a question from Mo, a Brown Belt.
He is an 11-year BJJ Brown Belt, a bit heavier. When he’s training at his gym, he’s able to do 10 rounds and train hard.
But, when he goes to another gym, especially with other heavy guys, he finds himself getting extremely tired.
He’s wondering what’s going on and what ideas I might have that could be helpful.
Hopefully, if you’re a big boy in Jiu-Jitsu and struggle with something similar, you find this helpful.
Thanks for watching.

Today, I got a question from Jill, a relatively new BJJ black belt. She recently shared one of my videos where I talk about not being the type of person who lectures someone out of submissions, only to start instructing them on how to finish it.
Her question was:
“As a black belt rolling with students, are there times when you pause to give instruction during a roll?”
I asked her if she was wondering where the line is between being helpful and being annoying.
She said yes. So, in this video I’ll discuss that!
Hopefully, you find this video helpful—thanks for watching!

One of the coolest experiences anyone can have is doing something you love—something you’re passionate about—that you would do for free, but someone actually pays you for it. Whether it’s BJJ, music, or anything else, it’s an amazing feeling.
I remember my first time experiencing this: my first professional MMA fight. I won in the first round, reflecting on my 2003 dream of becoming a pro MMA fighter. I was so excited and focused on the win that I almost forgot about the paycheck. I ended up making $500 for just 4 minutes of fighting. While the money wasn’t much, I was getting paid to do what I loved.
Why am I sharing this with you?
Because with our Chewjitsu Open comps, we’re giving away $500 to the No-Gi Absolute winners! We have divisions for beginners, intermediate, and advanced levels, as well as female divisions. This is a great opportunity for you to earn some cash for your hard work. A huge thanks to our sponsor, First Optimal, for making this possible.
The next Chewjitsu Open is happening in Louisville, Kentucky on February 15. I hope to see some of you there!

Today’s video question comes from a White Belt named Jon. (Had to look it up after the video! Sorry about that Jon!)
He’s a BJJ White Belt who loves using side control so his question is about my favorite types of side control techniques or something I think everyone should know.
So in this video I share 1 of my favorite side control movements in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The movement is simple and incredibly effective at creating opportunities for the back and submissions. I teach it to my White Belts and it’s part of our fundamentals curriculum, but it’s something I use all the time as a black belt in competitions and training.
So if you like side control, you need to know this movement!
Hope you enjoy the video.

The ‘surprise armbar’ escape from side control is great technique for two reasons. First, it’s a a totally valid escape that’s actually much easier to do than it looks, and second, it trains many of the movements and adjustments you need to master in order to do other, more conventional escapes like the elbow-knee escape from side control. Check out the full pin escapes program here: https://www.grapplearts.com/PinEscapes!
Good luck with your training,
