I like to teach straight ankle locks to my white belt students. I think getting a good understanding of this part of the game early on in your Jiu-Jitsu career puts you in great shape as you progress through your game. However, many white belt students give up on Ankle locks early because they can’t seem to finish them. And the blame is placed on the Anklelock, or ‘it just doesn’t work for me’…but the reality is, the weakness is in the execution, not the technique. It’s frustrating and massively ego depleting. So much so that very few attend the next class. That’s a pity. Because, Jiu-Jitsu, if you allow it – will change your life for the positive. No matter who you are and what your life circumstances. Now having said that being tapped is no fun. Particularly if you don’t know why. Back Step Half Guard Pass!

This move, I ensure my white belts really understand and have an ability to apply during rolling before they move to blue. Being captured in half-guard is, of course, common and people develop multiple techniques for handling and still passing that great half guard player. But in my experience, when those techniques are struggling, then the back-step half guard pass comes into its own. This is a very effective and simple pass. And if you are a half-guard player. 4 Awesome Attacks From Shin To Shin

Shin to shin is a really cool guard and I think it has become increasingly necessary as many grapplers are incredibly proficient at placing one leg between yours and then sliding their knee through in a knee through pass. This might happen on say, 70% of the time. So, it’s a good idea to think about a way to prevent this. One such way is to place your shin against theirs. In this video, I discuss how to take this shin to shin position and move into an attacking position. It’s a lot easier than it looks. There is reward with careful viewing guys.
