Recently I had a bunch of people ask about my warm up routine before BJJ competitions. This came about after some videos where I mentioned having a good warm up before matches is probably 1 of the most important things for performance that you can do on the day of the competition.
In this video I’ll give you a general idea of what I do the day of competitions from the moment I arrive to the venue to the moments in between matches.
Now there are lots of ways to warm up for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competitions. This is my way of doing it. If you plan on competing, try some of the ideas out and see which ones work for you.
The video is a little longer, but I wanted it to be as useful as possible for someone getting ready for a Jiu-jitsu competition or match.
Anyways, I hope the video is helpful to you in your next BJJ competition and thanks for watching.

In today’s Bjj technique video I show you 4 fundamental full guard sweeps that every White Belt should learn as early as possible. I call them fundamental sweeps because they’re essential techniques that have useful movements which can be used in a myriad of positions in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. And I say that every BJJ White Belt should learn them early because they can be used to setup combos and other attacks that will serve them well until they’re a Black Belt.
For instance the scissor sweep is a good basic sweep that is great for learning to open your guard and progress to open guards later on in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The bump sweep is great as a sweep but also is incredibly effective off-balancing technique that can lead to lots of other options in Brazilian Jiujitsu. And each closed guard sweep in this video has the same qualities to it.
Hope the video is useful to you and your training.
Thanks for watching.

In today’s Chewy ramble I answer a cardio question from a young BJJ White Belt who represents a common type in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. He’s someone who was a bit of a couch potato who then decided to get into Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (after watching videos and hearing podcasts on it). So far, it’s been great!
But he says he gets exhausted whenever he rolls and wants some tips on how to improve his cardio for rolling. He says he can’t train more BJJ with his schedule. So he’s looking for cardio training he can do off that mat, that will support his training on the mat.
In the video I’ll lay out 2 simple types of exercises to incorporate off the mat to support your rolling.
Hope the video is helpful!

Today’s question comes from Frank who’s a BJJ coach wanting to get back on the mats with students after an ACL surgery. Now he knows he won’t be able to do full on Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training like normal. But he wants to be able to coach on some level while his injury heals up.
In this video I share a few tips with how I got back on the mats to coach after suffering a meniscus tear and had surgery. A meniscus tear is definitely not as severe an injury as an ACL tear but I still had to deal with some of the same issues Frank is as a BJJ coach.
There are also some good tips in this video discussing coaching as well. So hopefully whether you’re a BJJ coach or not there is something valuable in it for you.
As always, thanks for watching.

In today’s video I answer a question from a newer Blue Belt who’s struggling to build offense in his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu game. He says his defense is good but he’s unable to use offensive techniques when he rolls.
So in this video I outline some very basic ideas on how to find a focus in BJJ. Along with this idea of focusing in a direction I also share how you have to let go of the need for certainty with the direction you pick. In addition to that, once you pick a direction expect lots of failures along the way. It’s always worth mentioning to people that any technique that’s been mastered to some degree was built on a mountain of failures.
Hope this video helps you with your BJJ. Thanks for watching.

Recently I ended up getting sick and tested positive for the virus. You know which one. This video was recorded a little over a week after my symptoms started to subside and after testing negative. In the vlog I’ll share my experiences and my 1st workout back after getting back to normal. I’ll also show you our garden at the house.
I’ll keep you updated with how I feel coming back to rolling and getting back to my normal routine.
Hope you’re doing well and hope you enjoy the video.

Today’s BJJ technique is a mount escape that I like using against people that are bigger or stronger than me. Granted you can do the mount escape just fine if the person is the same size or smaller than you. But it works great when your bridge isn’t very effective at off balancing someone. . . a problem that’s pretty common against bigger stronger opponents in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
In the video I’ll go over some basics about mount like setting up frames and being mindful of arm positioning. But overall it’s a simple escape that you can add into the mix at your next Brazilian Jiujitsu training session.
If you’re a half guard player and have either watched my half guard videos on the youtube channel or have my Half Guard Sweeper series then you’ll notice that the escape puts you right into the half guard with the outside hook. Which is a great sweeping position.
Anyways, if you’re struggling to escape full mount against bigger stronger opponents then I hope this technique helps!

Today’s BJJ rolling video is from a rolling session where I was purposely trying to put myself in less than ideal situations so I could work on escaping and getting out of them. This is a really good practice for any BJJ coach or Black Belt who can in most cases avoid getting stuck in a back spot.
Oh and in case you’re curious about the shorts. These were my old fight shorts I wore as a pro back in the day.
The video starts with my rolling against one of my tough White Belts being stuck in side control and working back to guard.
The next one is against a tough Black Belt training partner. I was trying a move and he quickly passed my guard and eventually got mount (which I had to work out of). The last roll was with my Brown Belt who is super scrappy. Again, I was trying to work a particular sweep and guard retention to fend off his movements.
Hopefully you enjoy the video and got something from it.

In today’s video I answer a question from a White Belt who’s new to BJJ and wants to go super hard all the time. He says he’s 300lbs and done some other grappling like combatives and wrestling and started doing Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. He also says his default setting is just hard and intense but his coaches are telling him to relax a little.
In this video I share some ideas about going hard, and when I would consider the right and wrong times to do so.
Hopefully if you’re somewhat newer this video will be useful to you if you’re struggling with a similar issue.
