While teaching an Instructor Certification Course we took a little tangent to explore this knee bar I have been hitting in training from a side control escape sequence. The reason I call this escape sequence “superior” isn’t that it is better than anyone else’s, but just that it is better than simply settling for replacing the guard as the primary option. It can also not only gain you the top position in many cases, but can lead to submission opportunities like this knee bar see here.
•
Big thank you to all Paul with Midwest Krav Maga and the Fit to Fight Republic for the integration of this curriculum, and to those that have completed the instructor evaluation and certification so far. If you are near an FTF affiliation, make sure to check it out, and get some fantastic training!

Technical mount is a kneeling mount variation of the mount that is potentially more dangerous than standard mount as your opponent has closer access to take your back and you have less defenses. Depending on his posture and energy, your survival and escape strategies have to be appropriate in order to be effective and efficient.
•
These are the best escapes I have come across and use frequently over the years. Nothing is perfect, but I haven’t seen anything that keeps you safer and gets you out more efficiently and faster than these four options. Each option is contingent on what space the top opponent is allowing you to have.
•
I hope you like these and get some usefulness out of them. Let me know in the comments if you have a goto escape not included here. Thank you as always for watching!

When deciding what I think are the most important escapes that people should learn early on in their training, I considered things positionally. The big 4 positions you’ll spend the most time in are mount, side control, guard and back mount. Being on the losing end of these sucks. Learning how to escape these positions is one of the most useful ways to spend your training time.
In this video, I show what I consider to be the most useful and helpful escapes from these positions.
• Upa Escape from Mount
• Elbow Escape from Mount
• Guard Replacement from Side Control
• Back Mount Escape
• Knee Cut Guard Pass
I hope this video is helpful. Let me know your thoughts in the comments. Thank you all for watching!

Most people at blue belt and above rely heavily on the elbow escape to escape the mount position. The majority only bump so they can make space, get to their side and perform the elbow escape. I used to suck at the bridge until I took my first seminar with Rickson Gracie. Some other details I picked up from Ryron Gracie on how to set it up properly and now it is my go to escape from the mount. The trap and roll puts you on top of the fight.Be on top if you can. Use the hip escape (shrimp crawl/elbow escape) to set up your trap and roll.

(Re-Upload) Escaping the mount is one of the most important skills and one of the most difficult things to in Grappling.
You should first learn how to be comfortable and safe when someone is mounted on you before you focus on escaping.
But, once you have some level of competence in bad positions, a good time to escape is when your opponent is transitioning to from one position to another.
In this scenario, we work on using the Upa as he mounts and not after he has settled into the position.
Because he has us in a tight hold, he tends to become over-confident and not realize he has limited his base, making it possible to trap and roll him when he is focused on going to mount.
This is one of my favorite ways to escape.
