Science of Joint Locks and Submissions
••••••••••••••••••••
Here is a sneak peek of my lecture on the science of joint locks and vascular restraints for @thegrapplingathlete online symposium.
.
Key Points Addressed:
•How vascular restraints render someone unconscious on a physiological level
•How joint locks affect the human body
•What strictures may be damaged with specific joint locks
•How to maximize your ability to apply joint locks / improve breaking mechanics
•If you can identify the damaged area there will be strategies on rehabilitation
.
I’ve heard countless times from training partners how they had such a difficult time trying to explain Jiu jitsu or kickboxing to their physical therapist. Even with generic videos on YouTube the therapist would not fully grasp what was happening.
.
Being both a board-certified orthopedic doctor of physical therapy AND a black belt in Jiu jitsu I explain how these techniques affect the human body.

If you get tension, tightness, or pain in the low back whether its from a tough training session, lots of sitting, or even if you have a demanding standing job, then you ay benefit from this technique.
I received a question about how to relieve low back tightness after BJJ class which inspired this video…and if you are someone that doesn’t have a bunch of equipment then this is perfect.
Spinal decompression simply creates a little pressure relief in the spine which can alleviate the feeling of tightness or tension in the low back and the surrounding muscles.
I recommend using a monster band (thick rubber band) around the hips and in this video I used my belt to anchor the band to the wall.
Hold times for the exercise can be 3-5 minutes for 1-2 sets.
This is best performed as a cool down or on a recovery day.

Prepare your joints for Jiu Jitsu
•••••••••••••••••••••••
Movement is the key for joint health.
.
Controlled articular rotations : (CARs) isolated rotational inputs at the end range is essential for maintaining the joint capacity.
.
I personally perform CARs as part of my morning routine as well as before I do Jiu jitsu class. Joint health is necessary for all activities but I would argue is incredibly important for jiu jitsu or other martial arts where one has to endure repetitive stress to their joints via joint locks.
.
Want to learn more about CARs and how to keep your joints health and allow you to have the necessary longevity to continue grappling at an older age?
.
Check out my kinstretch for Jiu Jitsu class where I begin the class will full body CARs before moving into the focus of the day. My next Kinstretch class is tomorrow Sunday 9am at @precisionjjacademy .

If you have tight shoulders from BJJ or just from prolonged sitting, then this technique will be very useful. It also can be slightly modified to work on stretching tight hamstrings.
