This clip from a class I recently taught while at @kravoz in Maryland focused on back control, attacks and escapes. This particular setup for an arm wrap to armbar is a sneaky and effective submission option to combo with when attacking from the back. Full class coming soon to Patreon.com/KnightJiuJitsu.
Huge thanks to @kravoz for having me and the whole @knifecontrolconcepts crew out for the weekend. And thanks to @boomboomcheney for being my uke during this section.
Recently I was asked which TWO Submission were my favorite for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu…
You might be surprised at how simple my answers are.
These two subs are ones I have successfully used in Adult Black Belt Level Competition and for years training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
Sometimes, at least for me, SIMPLE is BETTER…
Hope these help…
What 2 Submissions do you prefer? and WHY?

The arm crunch, or ude gatame if you like the Japanese words, is an extremely useful, quick and deceptive submission in its own right. However, it can also be used to set up great opportunities for sweeps and transitions to other submissions, as well. In this video, I show the fundamental mechanics of the arm crunch, as well as using it for the following purposes:
– Hiza Gatame from Butterfly Guard
– Triangle Choke (Sankaku Jime) Transition
– Sumi Gaeshi Sweep from Butterfly
– Heel Hook from Backside 50/50 Set Up
– Application from Kesa Gatame
Big Thanks to Ed Stahl from @metrolinamartialarts for the uke skills!
Hope you like it!

Even though the back is the strongest position, your opponent can focus completely on defense and escape, which makes things difficult sometimes. This is why it’s helpful to have some unconventional tactics to help secure the finish. In this video, Professor Aparecido Bill and I exchange some ideas on attacking from the back that you may not be as familiar with. I hope you enjoy. Let me know in the comments what your favorite of these was ⬇️

Today’s BJJ technique question comes from Spencer who’s getting to a Kimura from the bottom but is unable to finish it. He sent me a question asking for options based on the position he was getting to.
As a Kimura guy I know the exact issue he’s running into. So, in the video I show 2 different armbar options I’ve used in competitions. They’re just basic variations of the corkscrew armbar.
If you find yourself in the same situation, then I hope the techniques help.

A reader of my newsletter (https://www.grapplearts.com/newsletter) had a question about how to become better at setting up his submissions. I try to explain the concepts of singular attacks, combination attacks, and feinting attacks using multiple high-percentage examples
While at Sticks and Stones BJJ in Lake City, Florida, Michael McInally was kind enough to share with me a couple of his favorite ways to pass the guard straight to the back. I love the concept and I love the mechanics of these passes. Check it out and I hope you enjoy.

I had the pleasure of visiting my Alma Mater @three.rivers.academy recently and training with some great friends and former students. I made this reel for the sequence I’ve some success with and refined over the years. From mount: how to set up the kneeling kimura, transition into mono-plata, and eventually the straight arm lock.
Head over to my YouTube channel for more details.
Huge thanks to @toe_hold for this dope rash guard and all of the fine apparel and footwear.

These are some of my favorites from Kesa Gatame. Scarf hold has so many options and these are just a few, but some of my favorites. This and a lot more on my Patreon – Patreon.com/knightjiujitsu

In this video, we look at The Darce choke in extreme detail, strategies for it and applications, as well as versatile ways to attack with it. One of the most detailed Darce tutorials I have done to date for sure.

The Halloween Season is upon us, and I’ve been trying to comb through Halloween themed submissions. Typically, I refer to this as The Puppet Master, but it’s also commonly called The Scarecrow position. Either way it works. What are some other Halloween sounding grappling moves?
These are three ways to attack the arm from crucifix, using the legs. The branch up, straight and branch down arm bars are great initial options, depending on the energy of the opponent.
Don’t get caught in head and arm chokes…or any submission, for that matter. But, since it is inevitable that you will get caught, it is important to have late escapes, as well as early ones. This video details the sequence of escapes and the procedure for applying them effectively to counter the head and arm choke.
Always be as safe as possible in training and competition. I hope these details help. Thanks as always for watching!
