Today I’m going to show you guys a move I’ve used a few times in BJJ competitions.
It’s a pretty unusual move, but it’s effective, nonetheless. This one will catch your opponents off guard if you do it right.
I’m showing this in the Gi as a reaction to the Collar Choke, but it also works well in No-Gi BJJ/Grappling too. Just focus on having some sort of choke threat.
I hit this at IBJJF pans in 2013.
Most people don’t expect to get submitted as they’re escaping the back, but that’s why I love this one so much.
If you’re looking to name it, this is what I’d call it: The Reverse keylock from back mount.

The back is the most dominant position in BJJ and you DON’T want to lose it when you get here. Here’s how to reset the position if your opponent starts escaping so you can dominate and submit him from the back.

Today’s BJJ video comes from a situation I was talking about with 1 of my students recently. It’s a simple idea of making what I call a “tactical retreat” to a lesser position. In the video I explain this idea and how many BJJ White Belts or lower belts (although some higher belts do it too), try and hang onto a dominant position too long. Even after the main points of control have been lost.
This leads to a situation where the opponent is then able to potentially gain the upper hand. I personally made this mistake a ton early on in my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training and competitions.
So, in the video I’ll show some general ideas on this strategy from mount, back mount and side control.

Today’s question comes from a Brown Belt who’s a big guy, with big arms, big chest and a big belly. His words, not mine. He’s having trouble rolling from back mount because of his stomach getting in the way. And so, he’s curious if I have any work arounds technically to deal with that.
In this video I steer away from the idea of looking at this problem technically. Because for many people I think they’d make their BJJ skill better if they focused on develop their physical fitness and living a healthier lifestyle. Along with that I share a few quick stories about students and friends I’ve had in Jiu-jitsu who made massive improvements in their BJJ abilities by focusing on improving their fitness level.

Getting to the back is one thing, but controlling it and effectively attacking from there is a different story. My feeling is that you need to be fundamentally sound and controlling, but also relentless with combining threats, conventionally and unconventionally. Sometimes when you are throwing people around with the Kimura, you can goof up and give your back to them.
No worries! It isn’t game over – far from it. We can still use our Kimura to submit them or escape the back mount to a dominant finishing position – all while never letting go of the Kimura.

Get stuck in back mount during rolling? Happens to everyone in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu at some point. In today’s video I share 6 different ideas on escaping back mount. Some of them are a little funkier than others but I’ve been able to use all of them at some point against tough opponents during rolls.
The escapes include options against top arm side, bottom arm side, and body triangles.
At the end I share a simple back and forth drill you could use as a warm up or to get extra reps in.

Now I know you know the rear naked choke or strangle if you prefer. But I still people struggling to finish their chokes for 1 reason or another. So hopefully I can help you fix this in the next 10 minutes with this video if you experience this issue.

To start with, it’s typically a bad idea to attack submissions from bad positions, and that especially goes for when someone is on your back. But that’s exactly what this video is showing: submissions you can catch on the person on your back. This is one of my favorite ways to take back mount in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. And recently, in one of my vlogs I got a question about this technique since I used it in during a roll that was filmed. So I’ll show you that rolling clip from the Costa Rica video and then show you how to set it up from side control in case you want to give it a try during your next roll in the gym.
