Rob Biernacki from https://www.grapplearts.com/formula breaks down stopping the armbar attack when someone is on your back in rear mount in BJJ or in No Gi.
In class recently I was teaching what my BJJ students and I jokingly call the Spoon Choke. Which is just a rear naked choke that ends in the “spoon” position you might be in with a your significant other. And one of my White Belts asked a good question. Is position before submission a myth?
She asked this because the position we were attacking from is not part of the Big 3 most commonly awarded points in competition and focused on during training. These Brazilian Jiu-jitsu positions being Mount, Back Mount and Side Control with Knee On Belly being used as well.
I told her that position before submission is not a myth. Our ability to dominate position gives us the ability to control our opponents effectively and setup a submission with predictable effectiveness.
That said, there are submissions everywhere in Brazilian Jiujitsu and they don’t happen only after you gain dominant position.
In fact, for me one of the things I’ve found that has been helpful for back mount is by attacking the submission early, even before I establish the hooks and everything.
I still have dominant position even if it’s not the normal positions we are accustomed to.
By doing this I catch the person off guard while they’re fighting for position and I am able to secure the submission.
Check out the idea and maybe it will be useful to you.

In this video I show my favorite BJJ submission chain from Side Control I used as a White Belt in Jiu-jitsu rolling and competitions. Truth be told, I still use elements of it even now as a Black Belt. Just illustrating the fact that good sound fundamentals moves never become truly obsolete. So you don’t have to be a White Belt to use this submission series.
I originally learned this submission chain series from an old Brazilian Jiu-jitsu DVD series and would practice it with my roommate who was also involved with training.
It’s a pretty simple sequence. First it starts from Side Control with the Kimura and transitioning to North South. After that I use an Armbar if the Kimura isn’t successful or doesn’t feel right. Finally if all of those options fail I go for Back Mount.
If you know me, you know I love taking the back! And this is one of the first transitions I used that helped create this love for back taking.
So whether or not you’re a BJJ White Belt. I hope you enjoy the submission chain shown in this video and I hope it’s useful to you.

When deciding what I think are the most important escapes that people should learn early on in their training, I considered things positionally. The big 4 positions you’ll spend the most time in are mount, side control, guard and back mount. Being on the losing end of these sucks. Learning how to escape these positions is one of the most useful ways to spend your training time.
In this video, I show what I consider to be the most useful and helpful escapes from these positions.
• Upa Escape from Mount
• Elbow Escape from Mount
• Guard Replacement from Side Control
• Back Mount Escape
• Knee Cut Guard Pass
I hope this video is helpful. Let me know your thoughts in the comments. Thank you all for watching!
In this BJJ rolling video from my gym you get to watch me roll with some of my Brown Belts and Purple Belts. In addition to seeing me work for Back Mount you’ll also see me get caught in some bad spots.
My Brown Belt, Joe, starts the rolling off with a guillotine choke. My Brown Belt, Jeff, later on blasts past my Half Guard pull.
As I talk about in my videos on Youtube. It’s a good idea to focus on a particular position, technique or movement for a period of time. During this Brazilian Jiujitsu rolling session I was focused on getting to Back Mount.
This was from one of our Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training session focused towards rolling. I hope that you enjoy the video and the sneak peek from inside of our gym.

After 7 months off the mats, I have returned and brought some new tricks to the table!
In this video, I show a simple but very effective and hard to stop back take from the standard step over Kimura. This is a great option if you want to be more conservative with your attack and focus on advancing positions.
This also works well against smart defenders, as you can easily force this technique with no risk of losing position.

In this No Gi Rolling session from one of our Friday BJJ classes.I roll with a Purple Belt, White Belts and a Blue Belt.
During the rolling I was working on a few things. You’ll see some back takes in the works including a takedown that leads right into the Back Mount.
While rolling with the tall lanky White Belt I was working in certain positions with him. One of which was inside of his guard and getting him used to shooting up triangle chokes. If you watch the roll you’ll see me reach back inside the full guard. This is a basic mistake that i wanted him to take advantage of.
If you’ve watched any of my recent rolling videos then you’ll see some common techniques being used. This is not by accident. I’m purposely trying to improve certain technique, positions and aspects of my BJJ game.
I hope you enjoy the video and find something useful from it.
If you have any questions let me know.

Today I have a BJJ back take when someone sits back to honeyhole/saddle position for leg locks. The move is a bit surprising if you haven’t seen it and will definitely grab some attention.
In this video I show a back take I’ve been working on recently. If you’ve watched some of my most recent BJJ rolling videos you’ve seen it used in action.
After getting several requests from people I figured I’d share it with you.
The back take happens from the Saddle / Honeyhole / Sankaku position. Jeez, so many names to symbolize 1 position. Anyway, that’s where the back take starts. It starts with the person sits back to attack your legs.
In the video I give a couple of details on the technique and also show a way that you can put the “training wheels” on. What I mean by this is to make the movement easier to get started. A lot of times I have scaled options of techniques for people to begin with if the regular version is too difficult.
So check out the technique and give it a try! I hope the technique works for you!

In this BJJ rolling video video at our gym Derby City MMA you’ll see a good mixture of takedowns, guard passing and I almost got my back taken during one of my rolls by one of my purple belts.
During the BJJ rolling session I started off light with one of my purple belts who is nursing a rib injury. From there we picked up the intensity.
My second roll was with one of my BJJ purple belts who is also a MMA fighter and former wrestler. After a solid takedown he came after my back and almost had it!
After I managed to get out of the position I got on top and went for my own attacks. A lot of times when I roll with my guys I have to turn it up a little bit because they are getting good enough to give me a lot of trouble.
My last roll was with one of my other purple belts who is the kind of guy in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu that is 200+lbs and somehow manages to bend and fold in half. During our roll we had some great scrambles. 1 where he caught me in a leg attack and another where I was able to get around to the back.
Hope you enjoyed the rolling video.
