I share a story from my grappling career that would have been my most embarrassing moment. I share the story from my early wrestling career because it illustrates a point I wanted to make in regards to a question I received.
That question was, “What should you eat the day of a BJJ competition?”
I know why people ask this. They’re looking for some magical food to give them better performance. But as I’ll share in the video it’s a bad idea to change your diet in any major way right before a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu or any sort of grappling competition.
Now if you have a terrible diet. Then focus on changing that 1st rather than changing it the day of.
Hopefully the video is useful to you and your competitions.

Recently I had a bunch of people ask about my warm up routine before BJJ competitions. This came about after some videos where I mentioned having a good warm up before matches is probably 1 of the most important things for performance that you can do on the day of the competition.
In this video I’ll give you a general idea of what I do the day of competitions from the moment I arrive to the venue to the moments in between matches.
Now there are lots of ways to warm up for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competitions. This is my way of doing it. If you plan on competing, try some of the ideas out and see which ones work for you.
The video is a little longer, but I wanted it to be as useful as possible for someone getting ready for a Jiu-jitsu competition or match.
Anyways, I hope the video is helpful to you in your next BJJ competition and thanks for watching.

In today’s Bjj technique video I show you 4 fundamental full guard sweeps that every White Belt should learn as early as possible. I call them fundamental sweeps because they’re essential techniques that have useful movements which can be used in a myriad of positions in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. And I say that every BJJ White Belt should learn them early because they can be used to setup combos and other attacks that will serve them well until they’re a Black Belt.
For instance the scissor sweep is a good basic sweep that is great for learning to open your guard and progress to open guards later on in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The bump sweep is great as a sweep but also is incredibly effective off-balancing technique that can lead to lots of other options in Brazilian Jiujitsu. And each closed guard sweep in this video has the same qualities to it.
Hope the video is useful to you and your training.
Thanks for watching.

In today’s video I’ll be showing you guys the “Iron Squirrel” position from side control and guard passing battles in action.
It’s a simple defensive movement that’s focused on controlling the inside space of the offensive person’s body. It’s useful for avoiding submissions, setting up escapes and stopping guard passes. If you’re trying to increase your defense and survivability in BJJ, this idea is excellent.
And while the position and the way I’m doing it in this video is specific to side control bottom and similar areas. The idea behind controlling the inside space is useful from almost any position.
Hopefully you enjoy seeing the position being used in action and hopefully it gives you some ideas for training.

In today’s Chewy ramble I answer a cardio question from a young BJJ White Belt who represents a common type in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. He’s someone who was a bit of a couch potato who then decided to get into Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (after watching videos and hearing podcasts on it). So far, it’s been great!
But he says he gets exhausted whenever he rolls and wants some tips on how to improve his cardio for rolling. He says he can’t train more BJJ with his schedule. So he’s looking for cardio training he can do off that mat, that will support his training on the mat.
In the video I’ll lay out 2 simple types of exercises to incorporate off the mat to support your rolling.
Hope the video is helpful!

In today’s BJJ technique video I’m going to show you how to smash your opponent and then submit them from side control using the lapel grip. The submission we’ll be doing is a basic Brabo Choke. It’s kind of like a darce choke using the gi.
The brabo grip itself is a super strong option for control in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from multiple positions. In the video you’ll see how it can be used to really lock someone down in the bottom of side control.
Next week I’ll show you how to setup a very similar move from the bottom of full guard. So be on the lookout for that.
Otherwise, happy submission hunting in your next BJJ class.
Hope you enjoyed the video.

Today’s question comes from Frank who’s a BJJ coach wanting to get back on the mats with students after an ACL surgery. Now he knows he won’t be able to do full on Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training like normal. But he wants to be able to coach on some level while his injury heals up.
In this video I share a few tips with how I got back on the mats to coach after suffering a meniscus tear and had surgery. A meniscus tear is definitely not as severe an injury as an ACL tear but I still had to deal with some of the same issues Frank is as a BJJ coach.
There are also some good tips in this video discussing coaching as well. So hopefully whether you’re a BJJ coach or not there is something valuable in it for you.
As always, thanks for watching.

In today’s video I answer a question from a newer Blue Belt who’s struggling to build offense in his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu game. He says his defense is good but he’s unable to use offensive techniques when he rolls.
So in this video I outline some very basic ideas on how to find a focus in BJJ. Along with this idea of focusing in a direction I also share how you have to let go of the need for certainty with the direction you pick. In addition to that, once you pick a direction expect lots of failures along the way. It’s always worth mentioning to people that any technique that’s been mastered to some degree was built on a mountain of failures.
Hope this video helps you with your BJJ. Thanks for watching.
