Today’s video is a little different. Recently on Instagram I was asked, “What kind of advice would you give to a young man moving into adulthood?”
I answered that question and received a lot of positive feedback from it and so I decided to make a Youtube video over the same idea. I’m posting it on Sunday so it doesn’t interrupt the normal BJJ flow of the week, since that is why you’re probably subscribed after all. 😉
That said, the video of course touches on Brazilian Jiu-jitsu as it was a big reason I even took this advice to heart.
And while I could probably go on for hours giving tips to a young person about things to look for as an adult. I decided to start with something that I ignore at first, but then later on realized the true power of it. It’s a simple idea that a mentor passed on to me and so now I’m passing onto you.
There’s nothing woo woo or mystical about it, it’s simply bringing focus to something that a lot of people don’t focus on at all.
And whether it’s BJJ or life I’ve repeatedly found that the things I focus on tend to happen. The things I don’t focus on, don’t.
Hopefully the video is useful to you if you’re a younger person, or an older person looking to reshape things a bit.
Thanks for watching.

Fun BJJ story from last year. After I had just finished winning double gold at an IBJJF competition I walked off the mat to cool down and enjoy the fruits of my labor and some literal fruit (in the form of an acai bowl).
A Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Brown Belt came up to me around this time and told me that he loved my channel but it was too basic and wanted me to do more advanced techniques.
As I’ll explain in the video, much of my game is fairly basic. But the way I wield the techniques is advanced. Techniques are simply weapons. And a weapon is only as powerful as the warrior who wields it.
Hope you enjoyed the chat.

In this video I answer a question about a newer White Belt who’s saying that other people seem to be learning BJJ much faster than him. During the video I share how I was in the same situation when I first began Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
A great example of this was during my 1st BJJ competition where my friend Mike (who had started BJJ at the exact same time I did) perform much better than I did during the tournament. His Jiu-jitsu during the matches looked smooth and he was hitting all sorts of techniques, whereas I as struggling to get anything going.
Now I know I’m answering this question for a guy who is still very new to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu but this feeling of being jealous or upset because others are learning faster is something many people struggle with.
So hope the video is useful and thanks for watching!

In this video I share an armbar submission I’ve been working on during my BJJ rolling sessions. It’s a super slick arm lock that catches people off guard because of the reverse grip on the arm. In addition to the armlock itself I share a general principle on attacking arm submissions in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
The principle to take home for your own Brazilian Jiujitsu path is to attack the neck in order to attack the arm and vice versa. When you watch the video you’ll see what I mean. But the idea is simple. If you really want the arm submission. Start by disguising your intention with a different type of submission, or use 1 threat to open up another option.
This idea works for me from pretty much any position in Jiu-jitsu.
Hope the armlock and the principle are useful to you!

In today’s video I’ll show you 5 BJJ side control positions and how I hold them and use them to setup other techniques. I think this will be helpful to anyone from White Belt to the advanced ranks. You’ll see that I prefer some positions for pinning while others work better for setting up submissions or transitioning to other positions.
In the video I show. . .
– Head and hip
– Head and arm control
– Kesa Gatame
– Reverse side control (without arm)
– Reverse side control (with arm)
These are certainly not all of the side control positions you can use in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu but they do make of several of the most fundamental you’ll need. And in all honesty. These make up about 90% of the side control style positions I use as a Black Belt in both competitions and hard rolling.
So if you’re looking for some help with your side control then I hope the positions in this video are helpful to you.
Hope this video is helpful to you.

In today’s BJJ Q&A question from Amy she says that feels like she learns more from my instructional videos than she does from her actual BJJ coaches. She has a 2nd part of her question which is about how to talk to her coach about questions she has. So in this video I cover both topics.
First I talk about how instructional videos are great and you can learn a lot from them (and why this is true) but I also talk about why a coach is necessary and how her Brazilian Jiujitsu coach made it possible to learn from the vidoes.
In the 2nd part of the question I talk about the role of coaches as problem solvers and some good ways to approach a BJJ coach with the right kind of questions to ask.
If you’re in a similar situation I hope this video helps!
