In today’s Brazilian Jiu-jitsu technique video I show one of my favorite Butterfly Guard passes. It’s a simple guard pass that requires a bit of positioning and timing to hit properly. This video request came from my fellow bearded BJJ buddy Johnny Buck. You can watch some of our BJJ rolling videos on the channel. He sent it a question calling it a fake move and trolling me just a bit. That’s what friend’s do right?
The key to setting up this particular Butterfly Guard pass is to make sure to put your head in good position so that it forces your opponent slightly back onto their butt and causes them to be easily moved.
From their it’s a simple grip on the shoulder and knee. Again, it’s a super simple move. But if you drill it and build up the timing it becomes super effective. Even if the pass itself fails it will still cause the person to scramble for a Half Guard or possibly a Full Guard.
So if you’re looking for a Butterfly Guard pass. I hope the “Superman Pass” works for you with your BJJ training or competitions.

This is a simple and basic hook sweep but I hit it all the time. If you follow through with the bottom foot and keep following it you’ll have a lot of success.

When I first started learning the Butterfly Guard, I used to make myself so tired! I was using my legs all wrong and I didn’t understand the idea of off-balancing (Kuzushi) at all. As I gained more experience and began to study the games of BJJ champions such as Marcelo Garcia, Braulio Estima and Jean Jacques Machado, the beauty and efficiency of the position started to come to me.
In this video, I break down a really simple, basic Butterfly Sweep. This technique is fundamental to understanding how the Butterfly Hooks are supposed to be applied in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
In the 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu system, the Butterfly Guard can often look quite different. Besides there being no gi to grab, there’s also the idea of lineage at play. Our Butterfly Guard is generally passed down to Eddie Bravo from Jean Jacques Machado, one of the great Butterfly players in Jiu Jitsu history. As such, there’s a huge emphasis on overhooks and using the body to control the opponent rather than gi grips.
Beyond that, the Butterfly Guard is the perfect launching pad for all of the best submissions from Rubber Guard. My favorites from here include the Flying Kung Fu to Go Go Clinch, and the standard Gogoplata. Triangle Choke is always around the corner, too.

In my experience, a lot of people don’t really focus on these critical details in trying to sweep their opponent from the butterfly guard.
Because of this they’re not doing the sweep as effectively as they could and are therefore forced to transition to other positions.
Here, I discuss what angles to attack (and why) as well as how to break posture and why.

Stopped in to train with one of my friends today, and after the class, we had a short brainstorming about the art. Things of note were some discussion of half guard frame experimentation, loop choke details, playing butterfly guard and controlling the lasso.

This is a must-know transition, especially if you do No-Gi.
Since you don’t have the luxury of collar and sleeve controls in No-Gi, your Spider Guard, De La Riva, and Lasso Guard are not that effective… instead, Half-Guard and Butterfly Guard are usually the go to guards in No-Gi.
Transitioning between those two guards is a must.
Watch the video above to learn how it’s done, and also how to execute one of the most fundamental sweeps in Jiu Jitsu, the Butterfly Hook Sweep.

If you know me or have watched me roll. Then you know I LOVE Butterfly Guard. It’s one of my best positions.
Now I love Butterfly Guard for a lot of reasons.
I love that it’s great even if you can’t use a Full Guard super well. It’s great for sweeping. And it’s also a great place to transition to other forms of Guard in Brazilian Jiujitsu.
In this video I show how to use Butterfly Guard to transition into an X Guard or Single X Guard / Ashi Garami position.
In the video I touch on the basic idea that when we want to lift someone from a bottom position in Brazilian Jiujitsu. We need to get under their hips.
When you watch the technique shown in the video pay close attention to how I move under Chad.
Once in X Guard or Single X you can attack leg locks, sweeps or other submissions.
Give it a try!

The open guard is a very complicated position in BJJ, and if you train them in the techniques in the right sequence then you’ll get better much faster! https://www.grapplearts.com/dlr
