In today’s video I answer a question from a young BJJ Blue Belt who’s been winning a bunch of competitions and is obsessed with the goal of getting his BJJ White Belt in 1 year. Currently he’s been training about 10 months.
Now he wants to know ideas t impress his coach which I’m not going to do since I guarantee his coach is probably impressed by his performance in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Instead I try to share some ideas on finding meaning in between the goals he’s chasing.
I do this because I had the same tireless drive towards goals when I was younger and trying to impress my coaches and teammates. And while it can produce good results it can also produce a ton of frustration because you never stop to realize what you’ve accomplished because you’re always after the next goal.
I explain the idea in more depth in the video. Hopefully the video is useful to you.

Today’s video will show you some simple techniques to make your armbars safer and more effective as a BJJ White Belt.
The video comes from a question I got from a White Belt who’s afraid of falling off too fast with armbars from top position becuase he doesn’t want to injure his training partners or lose the submission.
So in this video I’ll show you how to use the arm you’re not attacking (when using an armbar from top) to anchor yourself to their body and slow the armbar down. This will also help weaken many of the common grips used to defend armbars.
If you’re struggling with armbars then I hope the video helps!

In today’s video I’m going to show you one of my favorite rolling back takes in BJJ that you can setup from side control.
This is one of my favorite ways to take back mount in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. And recently, in one of my vlogs I got a question about this technique since I used it in during a roll that was filmed. So I’ll show you that rolling clip from the Costa Rica video and then show you how to set it up from side control in case you want to give it a try during your next roll in the gym.
Join us for our next Costa Rica BJJ training vacation: https://herobjj.com/retreats/chewy/
Also, watch towards the end where I show a sneaky detail for catching more rear naked chokes. This is a simple adjustment I add on to the end of my back takes when I’m drilling in the gym and has made a big difference to my ability to finish chokes in competitions and high level rolls.
Thanks for watching!

Is it ok to use more painful and gritty techniques in BJJ? This is today’s question a young guy in the military who trains BJJ and wants to make sure his grappling is effective for a fighting situation due to the nature of his current career.
In this video, I discuss the idea of using rough and more painful techniques and also how to train the sport of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu but keep it useable for a fight situation.
Hope the video gives you some useful ideas to chew on.
Thanks for watching the video.

Do you get nervous before competitions? Do you feel like the nervousness negatively affects your performance? If so, then hopefully this video will help you.
I answer a question from a young guy who says he lost his match because of his nerves and wants a way to overcome them.
In the video I share some ideas on the subject and give some useful ideas of how to convert the anxiety before matches into something useful we can use to make us better when we compete.
Hope you enjoy the video, thanks for watching.

Today’s video is set of 7 Butterfly Guard sweeps we’ve been drilling in my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu classes (as of the time of posting this).
They’re very basic techniques. But I’ve found if you combine them together seamlessly, they’re difficult to stop. There are variations of how each move is used but these are some of mine. Hopefully they’re helpful to you with your BJJ training and drilling ideas.
In the video you’ll see . . .
– Over Under Sweep
– Double Overhook Sweep
– Coming Up To 1 Knee to Force the Person To Engage
– Failes Over Under to Double Over
– Coming Up for an Ankle Pick
– Armdrag to Back Mount
– Using a Straight Armlock as a Sweep
Thanks for watching the video!

Recently I was asked if I actually like having cauliflower ear. Many people know that cauliflower ear is a part of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and grappling. Many wear it as a “badge of honor” while others see it as gross.
In this video I share my ideas on it and how I feel about mine.
If you train in BJJ or grappling this isn’t to sway you one way or the other. It’s just an idea to chew on.

In today’s video I answer a question from a BJJ Black Belt coach who feels like he’s burnt out with teaching.
His question is how I stay motivated even after I’ve been doing it as long as I have. So in today’s video I share my mindset and how I stay motivated to teach BJJ, run a gym and some ideas for any BJJ coach who might be in the same boat.
Hopefully this is helpful to you if you’re in a similar situation.

Join me in Costa Rica: https://herobjj.com/retreats/chewy/
Today’s Brazilian Jiu-jitsu submission technique video was filmed while I was down in Costa Rica. You’ll hear the faint hum of the fan in the background as it stays at a toasty temperature there year round.
In the video I show a punch choke from a side control position that connects directly together with the Kimura and Armlock sequences I was showing during the BJJ camp.
Anytime I have an arm attack I always like to find a way to connect it with a choke as well since the way you defend the two is usually very different. Enjoy the BJJ technique. I hope it helps.

Today’s video comes from a 6 month BJJ White Belt who’s also a Judo Brown Belt. He’s loving his beginning in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and has plenty to work on with the ground game.
He recently had an experience where he was called a sandbagger by someone at another gym during an open mat. I’ll get into details about it in the video.
But his main question is about whether or not he should divulge details about his previous Judo experience to people in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu when he travels to other schools. He’s been reluctant to do this because he doesn’t want to come across as cocky or that he’s some Judo phenom.
In the video I’ll share 2 examples of students I’ve had who were White Belts in BJJ but had extensive background in Wrestling and Judo and how things went.
Thanks for watching the video.

P.S Here’s the video I mentioned earlier about the Black Belt dressed as a White Belt prank:
