Today’s question comes from Jen who is struggling to retain information in BJJ and she would like to drill her Brazilian Jiu-jitsu techniques more to retain the information better. Only problem is that her only training partners currently are her boyfriend (who only likes to roll) and her coach.
So she sent me a question about how to retain information better. So in today’s Chewy ramble video I’ll explain an idea of active drilling and how to drill BJJ techniques even if your partner only wants to roll.
I share some experiences of my own and also a story about Bernardo Faria that I heard recently on a podcast.
I hope the video is helpful! I’ll talk to you next time.

Ever have trouble holding the mount position in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu? It used to be a big problem for me and I know a lot of people who struggle with it. So in this video I touch on a couple of simple ideas to chew on in order to make your mount position stronger.
In the video I show a modified position that allows me to attack armlocks but it’s also good for holding the mount position itself. The reason is that by going to the position that I show in the video I disable 2 of the necessary things a person needs to escape efficiently. Frames and hip power. Without these, escaping mount is going to be difficult.
This will allow you to hold the position longer and increase your chances of getting a submission.
So I hope this video helps Brett and hopefully it helps you too!

What is the difference from White Belt to Blue Belt and Brown Belt to Black Belt. That’s the question for today’s Q&A video. It’s an interesting one too. Because each belt / level of skill seems to have a certain pattern to it.
Going from White Belt to Blue Belt is one of the biggest shifts in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. You go from knowing nothing to having a foundation of knowledge. If it was a language it would be like not knowing a language to being able to speak.
Brown Belt to Black Belt is usually a bit more subtle. In my experience with BJJ people’s game at this point is set. It’s just in need of a bit of refinement and this is usually what you see at this level. Think of it as sanding out a piece of woodwork to get it a smooth finish.
Hopefully the video gives you some ideas to chew on for your own BJJ.

Have you ever wanted to make a shift to getting in shape and being a healthier person? Maybe just hit a big goal? We all have right? Well, this is is the basic question Gareth asked for the channel. He wanted to know when I made the shift to being a healthier person.
When he asked this question I really had to think a bit. But it started back in high school wrestling. And in this video I identify the multiple stages of how I lost weight, and got in better shape. This process that I illustrate in the video is also the same one I use for pretty much everything I’ve ever accomplished (that I’m proud of) in my life.
Keep in mind this is my way of doing thing. It may work for you, it may not. But give it a try and see it you find it useful.
Hopefully it’s useful to Gareth and anyone else.

In today’s BJJ video I’m going to show you a fundamental concept that EVERY guard passer should know and understand. Not some of them, all of them. This basic adjustment was huge when it came to finishing a guard pass and holding side control when I started to focus in on it.
Now it’s simple! Super simple. But understanding the idea of blocking the hip will make your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu much better in regards to holding side control and passing the guard.
Back in the day I didn’t understand this idea and I would often pass the guard and then the person on bottom of guard would immediately regain guard position.
Now you don’t need to drill this thing for hours and hours on end. Simply be mindful of it the next time you begin rolling.

So like a lot of people over the last few months, Joe and I let our diets and training slide a little bit or are just not in the shape we’d prefer. So over the next 2 months Joe and I are going to focus on getting back into better shape and take you along for the ride.
Joe is focused more on weight loss where I’d just like to adjust my composition a bit.
We’ll be doing a weekly vlog just catching you up with what we are doing. Hopefully this can be useful or inspiring for your own training.
I’ll personally be sharing workout ideas, the food I’m eating, etc etc in the hops that it’s helpful to you.

In today’s video I answer a question related to how I test new supplements for BJJ training and seeing their affect on performance. So in this video I share the way I personally test out new supplements and dietary changes to see if it’s having a positive effect or negative effect on my Jiu-jitsu. In some cases I’m going off of how I feel where as others I’m actually getting blood drawn to test the changes.
The question came as a response to a segment on my podcast where I spoke about CBD and Charlotte’s Web cbd products. So I talk about the positive changes (especially with recovery) I’ve felt from taking cbd.
Which just for transparency Charlotte’s Web CBD is a sponsor of our podcast. but if you’d like to try any of their stuff head over to www.charlottesweb.com and use the promo code Chewjitsu to get 15% off of your total purchase.
If you’re in the market for new supplements to assist with your BJJ training then I hope the video is useful.
Thanks for watching.

In today’s BJJ video I cover what I believe is a common misconception about White Belt survival in Jiu-jitsu training. This video is in response to another Chewy Q&A I did where I spoke about 70% of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is won and lost in the guard passing battle. This include passing guard, sweeping, not getting swept, guard retention, etc.
You can watch that original video where I discussed the idea to a White Belt who was feeling overwhelmed with techniques here: https://youtu.be/Lj_YN8wvxI0
Now in this video I talk about the misconception and break it down visually with Adam to illustrate my point. I hope this video helps you think of being able to survive in BJJ as more than just balling up and getting smashed on bottom. Because I believe if you’re strong from the guard passing (top and bottom) battle you’ll be ale to survive longer.
Hope the video is useful to you and your BJJ training.
Thanks for watching.

In today’s BJJ rolling video you’ll see me working from Full Guard. Since we are just getting back to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training in our gym we are starting with training from Full Guard. Since Full Guard is one of the essential positions in Jiu-jitsu I figured it’d be a good place to start back.
During the Brazilian Jiujitsu training session you’ll see me trying to play from my Full Guard (which isn’t my best position) and using some techniques for guard retention. One of the rolls against my buddy and fellow Black Belt Chris was a back and forth battle. I did manage to catch a couple of submissions and techniques along the way.
Anyways, hope you enjoyed the roll. Feels good to be back on the mats. Hope you are or will be soon too.

If you’re working from the bottom of Full Guard it can be super difficult and frustrating to setup techniques against someone who’s simply staying tucked in tight and squeezing. So in this video I’m going to show you a sweep that every White Belt in BJJ knows that can be used as a sweep by itself or as a setup for other options.
In the video I show the basic Hip Bump / Kimura sweep and then show how it can be used as a way to uproot the top person from their tight defensive position. I’ve personally used the kimura sweep to armbar setup in my early White Belt and Blue Belt competitions.
So if you’re up against a tough guard passer who stays tight and defensive then I hope this video is useful to you. I know this idea was super useful to me.
